Luka Doncic, Nikola Jokic and Domantas Sabonis make history as first-ever trio to record 20+ triple-doubles in a season
During Tuesday’s 104-100 road loss to the Golden State Warriors, Luka Doncic, the star guard of the Dallas Mavericks, achieved his 20th triple-double of the season. This accomplishment places him alongside a historic trio.
Although Dallas’s NBA-best seven-game winning streak came to an end, Doncic continued to impress with an outstanding stat line. The five-time All-Star recorded 30 points, 12 rebounds, 11 assists, and five 3-pointers with a 50.0% shooting percentage.
By achieving his 20th triple-double, Doncic has reached this milestone in only six seasons. This surpasses his previous career high of 17 during the 2019-20 season.
Despite his impressive performance, the 25-year-old continues to hold the third position in the NBA for most triple-doubles this season. Ahead of him are Domantas Sabonis from the Sacramento Kings with 26 and Nikola Jokic, the superstar center from the Denver Nuggets, with 23.
According to a Twitter post by NBA History on X, Doncic, Sabonis, and Jokic have become the first trio of players to achieve 20 or more triple-doubles in a single season.
Similarly to Doncic, Sabonis achieved his career-high in triple-doubles this season, almost doubling his previous record of 14 set last year.
Jokic, on the contrary, has yet to match his career-high total of 29 triple-doubles from the previous season by six.
As the season nears its end, none of the three players have enough time left to surpass the single-season triple-double record held by former OKC Thunder superstar point guard Russell Westbrook. In the 2016-17 season, Westbrook, a nine-time All-Star, achieved an impressive 42 triple-doubles.
Despite this, the trio’s record still showcases the continuous growth in skill level within the modern-day NBA.
Warriors’ Steve Kerr Applauds Andrew Wiggins for Stellar Defensive Performance Against Luka Doncic’s 30-Point Triple-Double
Despite Luka Doncic’s impressive performance on Tuesday, recording his 20th triple-double and 15th 30-point triple-double of the season, Warriors coach Steve Kerr expressed satisfaction with his team’s defensive efforts against the Mavericks’ superstar.
Kerr praised forward Andrew Wiggins’ defensive performance against Doncic during his postgame interview. The experienced coach credited Golden State’s victory to their strong defense.
“It was our defense that got us the win,” Kerr said. “Holding those guys to 100 points is pretty difficult. I thought [Wiggins] was brilliant. He put in so much effort just trying to make Luka work. Luka was amazing, as he always is, but that effort really set a tone.”
Despite only scoring 30 points on Tuesday, Doncic is still averaging a league-leading 33.9 points per game in 66 games, indicating a slightly below-average performance for him.
Despite being an exceptional player, he is second in the league for 30-plus-point games (48), just behind OKC Thunder’s superstar point guard Shai Gilgeous-Alexander (50). As a result, scoring 30 points in a game is not an extraordinary feat for him.
Despite facing tough defenses, Doncic consistently proves his offensive prowess by filling the stat sheet every night. This is a true testament to his dominance on the court.
