Lawsuit Filed Against Roblox for Alleged Safety Failures
In a significant legal move, Liz Murrill, the Attorney General of Louisiana, has announced the initiation of a lawsuit against Roblox Corporation. The lawsuit claims that the popular online gaming platform fails to implement crucial safety measures, rendering it a potential haven for sexual predators, particularly concerning given its primary audience of children.
Allegations of Facilitated Exploitation
The legal complaint is quite severe in its allegations. According to excerpts from the lawsuit:
For years, Defendant has knowingly enabled and facilitated the systemic sexual exploitation and abuse of children across the United States, including in Louisiana. Through willful disregard and deceptive practices, Defendant has permitted and perpetuated an online environment in which child predators thrive, directly contributing to the widespread victimization of minor children in Louisiana. Defendant’s deliberate failure to implement effective safety measures to protect child users from well-documented predatory threats, along with its ongoing failure to warn parents and children of the foreseeable dangers posed by its platform, has directly facilitated the widespread sexual exploitation of minors and inflicted severe, lasting harm upon the children of Louisiana.
The Global Context
While the lawsuit specifically targets Louisiana, the concerns raised are far-reaching. Roblox, which launched in 2006, has emerged as a leading platform for user-generated content (UGC), boasting a reported 85.3 million daily active users as of February 2025. The platform has gained immense popularity, with claims that nearly half of all American children under 16 engage with Roblox at least once a month.
International Concerns and Measures Taken
Roblox’s issues are not confined to the United States; the platform has been banned in several nations, including China, Jordan, North Korea, Oman, Qatar, and Turkey, primarily due to concerns surrounding child exploitation risks. In response to earlier safety criticisms, Roblox implemented new safety features, such as requiring parental permissions for accessing certain chat functionalities for users under 13 and for engaging with content rated as “Moderate”for those under 9.
Continued Criticism and Controversial Changes
Despite these measures, Attorney General Murrill argues that the protections in place are grossly inadequate, as underscored by the current lawsuit. In a related controversial development, Roblox recently announced its decision to remove ‘vigilantes’—users who had taken it upon themselves to monitor the gaming environment for safety issues. The company claims this decision is aimed at improving user safety, suggesting that the vigilantes’ actions were potentially compromising the gaming experience.
As the legal proceedings unfold, the outcomes may not only shape the future of Roblox but could also influence how online gaming platforms approach child safety in a rapidly evolving digital landscape.
