This update now features two notable characters, Eloise Hawking and Danielle Rousseau, who arrived on the island by alternate means.
8. Frank Lapidus
First Appearance: Season 4, Episode 2
Frank Lapidus was meant to be the pilot of Oceanic Flight 815, yet his failure to wake up on time led to another pilot taking his place. Right from the start, he identified the sunken plane as a fake, prompting him to voice his concerns. Shortly thereafter, he became a vital part of Widmore’s team on the freighter.
As the helicopter pilot facilitating trips between the island and the ship, he played a crucial role at the end of Season 4 by helping the Oceanic Six escape the island. This wasn’t the last of Frank, who later reappeared aboard the Ajira Airways flight.
7. Eloise Hawking
First Appearance: Season 3, Episode 8
Eloise Hawking’s character evolves throughout the series as the main group time-travels. Her extensive knowledge derived from years spent on the island alongside Charles Widmore proves invaluable.
She significantly guides key characters like Daniel Faraday and Desmond Hume and later plays an essential role in assisting the Oceanic Six and Ben to return to the island. Despite her somewhat unsympathetic nature, her importance cannot be overstated.
6. Daniel Faraday
First Appearance: Season 4, Episode 1
Arriving on Widmore’s freighter, Daniel Faraday is a highly intelligent physicist whose motivations remain unclear initially. However, it becomes evident that his fascination with the island’s scientific anomalies drives him.
His presence becomes crucial as he elucidates many of the island’s mysterious happenings and provides unique insight due to his connections to Charles Widmore, Eloise Hawking, and Desmond Hume.
5. Danielle Rousseau
First Appearance: Season 1, Episode 9
Danielle Rousseau emerges as one of the most intriguing off-plane characters in Lost. A Frenchwoman, she has survived on the island for 16 years, driven by the hope of finding her daughter who was abducted from her as a child.
4. Richard Alpert
First Appearance: Season 3, Episode 7
Richard Alpert, who arrived on the island aboard the Black Pearl in the 19th century, possesses a fascinating backstory. The ship, initially a slave ship, islander interactions frequently draw back to it for dynamite through various plots.
Despite the passage of time, Richard maintains his youthful appearance, thanks to a wish for immortality granted by Jacob, which prevents him from aging and taking his own life. His role as an advisor to Jacob is pivotal throughout the series.
3. Juliet Burke
First Appearance: Season 3, Episode 1
Initially introduced as a member of the Others, Juliet Burke gradually becomes a well-favored character among fans. Her backstory reveals her as another isolated individual yearning for a normal life, hindered by Ben’s control over her due to her sister’s situation.
As her character develops, viewers grow to appreciate her kindness, and she notably forms a touching bond with an unlikely companion.
2. Benjamin Linus
First Appearance: Season 2, Episode 14
Throughout much of Lost, Benjamin Linus is often portrayed as a character that viewers love to hate. His lies and manipulations frequently alienate him, particularly with John Locke, as he grapples with feelings of inadequacy compared to others favorited by the island.
Although a potential for redemption looms, Ben continuously resorts to selfish acts in a quest to reclaim his control over the island, often pitted against Charles Widmore. His complex character arc makes him crucial to many plotlines.
1. Desmond Hume
First Appearance: Season 2, Episode 1
Desmond Hume stands out as one of the most beloved characters in Lost. His absence in certain seasons makes the plot feel incomplete, highlighting the significance of his character.
His unique relationship with Charles Widmore, stemming from his romance with Penny Widmore, and the extraordinary abilities he acquires after the hatch implodes, shape his role profoundly. Additionally, Desmond plays a crucial part in clarifying the flash-sideways events in Season 6.
