After numerous fetch quests for Dareel and Samin in Monster Hunter Wilds, you’ll unlock Samin’s Special Research Report. This unique mission involves capturing a rare animal known as the Sandstar, which appears exclusively at night. Successfully completing this task not only contributes to your progress but also rewards you with an achievement.
Locating the Sandstar in Monster Hunter Wilds
The Sandstar is quite elusive in Monster Hunter Wilds. This small, blue, mouse-like creature resembles Pokémon’s Azurill and is known for its swift movements, particularly when you approach. So, how can you increase your chances of catching one?
First and foremost, the Sandstar can only be found at night in the Windward Plains, specifically around the Oasis Pop-Up Camp in Area 13. To increase your likelihood of encountering it, rest at the Pop-Up Camp until night falls, ensuring the conditions are set to ‘Plenty’.Once night falls, make your way towards Area 16.

Upon reaching Area 16, keep an eye out for the Sandstar near the Flashflies. If it doesn’t appear immediately, try exploring the area since it might have spawned in a different location. If you’re still unsuccessful, rest again until nighttime and give it another shot.
There was an instance when I unintentionally defeated a Sandstar, leading to it not spawning for several nights. It returned only after I explored a different biome and then rested until nightfall again. Therefore, if luck isn’t on your side, consider taking a break in another location before retrying your search.

When you do finally spot a Sandstar, approaching it is not recommended as it will quickly dart away. Instead, use a Screamer Pod to stun the creature momentarily. Follow up promptly by deploying your Capture Net to secure your catch before the stun effect fades.
Upon successfully capturing the Sandstar, you’ll unlock the achievement titled ‘I caught a Shooting Star!’ You can then return to Samin at the Windward Plains Base Camp to report your success.
