Apple Launches Live Translation Feature with AirPods Pro 3

Apple has recently introduced an exciting new capability—Live Translation—during the much-anticipated AirPods Pro 3 announcement. This innovative feature, powered by the Apple Intelligence AI suite, facilitates real-time communication between users who speak different languages. However, in a notable setback, European users will find themselves excluded from accessing this functionality.

Availability Status for EU Users

As outlined on Apple’s feature availability page, the Live Translation capability will not be accessible to users located in the European Union (EU).According to Apple, “Live Translation with AirPods is not available if you are in the EU and your Apple Account Country or Region is also in the EU.”This statement has left many potential users in Europe disappointed as they anticipate testing this revolutionary feature.

Regulatory Challenges in the European Union

The restriction for European customers is largely due to stringent EU regulations such as the Artificial Intelligence Act and the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).These laws necessitate that Apple ensures compliance with specific legal frameworks before the Live Translation feature can be offered in the region.

It appears that the EU regulatory bodies are keen on reviewing the Live Translation feature to ascertain its adherence to privacy and data protection laws. The timeline for when Apple might be able to offer this capability to European users remains uncertain, although discussions with EU authorities may already be in progress.

Current Language Support and Future Plans

As of now, the Live Translation feature supports several languages, including English (both UK and US), French, German, Portuguese (Brazil), and Spanish. Excitingly, Apple is also preparing to expand language support to include Italian, Japanese, Korean, and simplified Chinese later this year.

Compatibility with Apple Devices

The Live Translation feature won’t be limited to just the AirPods Pro 3; it’s also compatible with AirPods 4 featuring Active Noise Cancellation, as well as AirPods Pro 2 equipped with the latest firmware. To use this feature, users will need to pair their AirPods with an iPhone that supports Apple Intelligence and runs iOS 26 or later. Apple plans to release iOS 26 along with new firmware updates on September 15, enhancing the overall experience.

For users outside of the EU, the introduction of the Live Translation feature marks a significant advancement in communication technology, bridging language barriers and enhancing interaction in our increasingly globalized world.
