Limited Edition Mew Card: Only 1,510 Available in Pokémon TCG, But There’s a Twist

The Pokémon Trading Card Game is introducing a highly anticipated Mew card with an incredibly limited print run, exclusively available in China. This initiative is part of The Pokémon Company’s ongoing efforts to strengthen its presence in mainland China, especially since the launch of Pokémon Sun & Moon. The company has taken significant strides by releasing various Pokémon products in simplified Chinese—the official script recognized by the Chinese government. In 2022, The Pokémon Company began publishing trading cards in simplified Chinese, although these releases have yet to align fully with the latest card sets.

Launch of Mew Ex Card in China

Just earlier this month, The Pokémon Company unveiled the first of four upcoming sets sourced from the Scarlet & Violet series, known as 151. To celebrate this launch, they are offering an exclusive giveaway of 1, 510 Mew ex cards featuring original artwork. As detailed by PokeBeach, enthusiasts can obtain a card by completing at least 15 tasks across three different tournament venues located in China. After fulfilling these requirements, participants may enter a lottery for a chance to win one of the coveted cards. A total of 151 cards will be distributed monthly from March through December.

Historically, the rarest Pokémon TCG cards include prizes awarded during the game’s inception. For instance, the Pikachu Illustrator card holds a record sale exceeding $200, 000, with only 39 copies ever distributed. However, it should be noted that this particular card lacks any current gameplay mechanics. Additionally, the Prototype Blastoise card, which only has four prints, was a prototype developed by Wizards of the Coast prior to the game’s official release.

Our Perspective: Exciting Variants for Chinese Collectors

Curious About US-Exclusive Pokémon Cards?

Pikachu and Gengar Chinese Variant

While expanding into the Chinese market is a strategic move, it is intriguing to observe the number of Pokémon card variants unique to China. Within the 151 sets, there are at least four distinct Pikachu cards that have yet to be released elsewhere.

I anticipate that the new Mew ex card will fetch a price in the thousands when it eventually surfaces on the secondary market. Furthermore, I expect the other exclusive Chinese variant Pokémon Trading Card Game cards will also attract substantial interest and high prices from collectors.
