Lil Durk’s Involvement with Black Disciples: Exploring the Rapper’s Connection to Chicago’s Street Gang

Last week, on October 24, Lil Durk, the Grammy-winning hip-hop artist, found himself in legal trouble in California due to murder-for-hire allegations, along with five associates from his crew, OTF.

This arrest is linked to an attempted revenge shooting that occurred in August 2022, targeting his long-time adversary, Quando Rondo, as reported by NPR News. Thankfully, Rondo survived the incident, but his cousin, Saviay’a Robinson, tragically lost his life during the altercation.

This marks the second occasion Lil Durk has faced incarceration. The rapper’s musical journey began alongside his entanglements with crime, having joined the Black Disciples gang in 2009. He remains affiliated with the Chicago gang, in the company of fellow artists such as Lil Reese, Chief Keef, and the late King Von and Fredo Santana.

From High School Dropout to Gang Member

Raised in the Englewood area of South Chicago, Lil Durk was introduced to gang culture at a young age. At the age of 17, he became a father, which prompted him to take his music career more seriously.

During this period, he was enrolled at Paul Robeson High School but opted to drop out to pursue a different path. Upon leaving school, Durk became a member of the Black Disciples, a prominent street gang in Chicago.

Shortly after joining the gang, he began encountering various legal issues. In October 2011, he faced charges for possessing a firearm with an altered serial number, which led to a guilty plea and subsequent release.

Years later, an incident involving Quando Rondo and his entourage erupted in violence, resulting in the death of King Von, a close friend of Durk’s. Furthermore, in 2021, the rapper’s older brother, DThang, was also killed in a shooting.

Legal Troubles with FBG Duck’s Family

On October 9, LaSheena Weekly, mother of the deceased rapper FBG Duck, initiated a wrongful death lawsuit against Lil Durk, seeking monetary damages for her son’s death in the August 2020 shooting.

In addition to Lil Durk, the lawsuit implicates his record label and the international companies distributing his music, as having contributed to the murder of her son, as reported by Block Club Chicago.

This tragic incident occurred in front of a Dolce & Gabbana store and resulted in injuries to two bystanders, including FBG Duck’s girlfriend, Cashae Williams, and another individual named Davon Brinson, both of whom are also plaintiffs in the case.

The lawsuit lists several defendants, including Lil Durk, King Von’s estate, their prominent record label, Dolce & Gabbana, two security firms, the city of Chicago, and six members of the O Block gang, who were convicted of FBG Duck’s murder earlier this year.

According to the legal complaint, both Durk and his label were aware of King Von’s grudge against FBG Duck and aimed to cultivate a brand based on violence and ‘reality rap,’ which often involved real-life violent actions.

It further states:

“They recognized that reality rap, alongside violence and notoriety, were effective strategies in boosting record sales, streaming numbers, and overall visibility, thus creating a profitable violent image.”

In the aftermath of Lil Durk’s arrest, the Dinizulu Law Group issued a statement, expressing that this development is a step closer to achieving justice, as reported by Complex.

The rapper, known for his track “Rich Off Pain,”is currently held at the Broward County Jail in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, with no possibility of bail. As he awaits trial, no date has yet been established.
