In a poignant tribute, Ruth Gibbins, the sister of the late singer Liam Payne, honored his memory on Instagram following his passing on October 16 at the age of 31. She expressed her deep sorrow and emphasized how her brother, who was not just family but also her “best friend,”brought immense joy and laughter into her life. She shared her struggle to come to terms with his absence.
In her heartfelt post dated October 19, Ruth reflected on their special bond:
“I can’t believe this is real … Liam was my best friend; no one else could make me laugh like he did. His impressions always had me in stitches, and he loved knowing how much joy he could bring.”
She recalled that Liam was “born with music in his veins,”and would beam with pride whenever he showcased his new creations to her. Ruth concluded her message with a heartfelt expression of regret:
“I’m sorry I couldn’t save you. Love you…”

Ruth Gibbins shared that Liam Payne “just wanted love”and sought to “bring happiness through his music.”She reminisced about how he left home at 17 to pursue his dreams, and how she would often visit him while he was a contestant on The X Factor, before he rose to fame with One Direction.
She remarked that “Liam cherished 1D”and regarded his bandmates as “brothers,”noting that they often spent hours “laughing and discussing his goals and concerns.”
Ruth expressed her admiration for Liam’s incredible talent, mentioning that what she valued most was his ability to make her smile.
She added:
“Your talent leaves me in awe; it should be against the law to be so gifted. You not only excel at everything you do but you also seem completely unaware of how brilliantly you succeed each time.”
After expressing gratitude for having the “best brother and friend,”she assured Liam that she would look after Bear, his seven-year-old son, ensuring he always remembers how wonderful his father was. She wrapped up her tribute with the words:
“Thank you for transforming my life, for the remarkable memories, and for being the greatest brother and friend I could ever ask for… I’d travel to the ends of the universe to bring you back.”
In the meantime, their father, Geoff Payne, is currently in Buenos Aires making arrangements for Liam’s body to be repatriated. A report by the London Evening Standards on October 18 mentioned that Geoff was seen reading messages from fans at a temporary memorial outside the Casa Sur Hotel, the site of Liam’s tragic fall from the third-floor balcony.
Liam Payne had been visiting Argentina for two weeks to attend a concert by his former bandmate Niall Horan.
Tributes have poured in from various people including his ex-wife, Girls Aloud singer Cheryl, One Direction bandmates, girlfriend Kate Cassidy, and his mentor Simon Cowell, all paying their respects.
