Tragically, Liam Payne, the former One Direction star, passed away on October 16 at 31 years old. Local authorities in Buenos Aires, Argentina, reported that the singer fell from his hotel room balcony at the CasaSur Palermo Hotel. An investigation is currently underway, and an autopsy has yet to take place.

Prior to his untimely death, Payne was enjoying a vacation in Argentina with his girlfriend, Kate Cassidy. They had been sharing snippets of their trip on social media, with Liam posting on Snapchat just hours before the incident, expressing that he was having a “lovely day.” The couple attended a concert by Niall Horan at the Movistar Arena, after which Cassidy returned home on October 14, while Payne chose to stay in Buenos Aires.

Pablo Policicchio, representing the Security Ministry of Buenos Aires, confirmed to the Associated Press that Liam Payne:

“Had thrown himself from the balcony of his room.”

According to police, the injuries sustained by the singer were “extremely serious,”as he fell from a height of approximately 13 to 14 meters, leading to his immediate death. Alberto Crescenti, head of the local emergency medical service, informed Todo Noticias TV:

“We arrived in time to try and revive him, but there was nothing we could do.”

Allegations of Substance Use Leading to Liam Payne’s Death

The police released a statement indicating they were summoned to the hotel following a report from an employee regarding “an aggressive man possibly under the influence of drugs and alcohol.” A hotel staff member recounted that the singer had destroyed his laptop before being escorted back to his room. An audio recording obtained by Reuters revealed an employee calling for help, stating:

“When he is conscious, he is destroying the entire room, and we need you to send someone.”

The staff member went on to indicate that his behavior posed a risk to himself.

Upon the police’s arrival, the hotel manager had reported hearing a loud crash from the inner courtyard and discovered that a man had plummeted from a balcony. This incident reportedly occurred shortly after 5 p.m.

TMZ exclusively published a photograph of the scene, showing the hotel’s wooden deck surrounded by tables and chairs. While they didn’t share an image of the singer’s body, some parts of his hand were blurred in the picture.

Liam Payne had been candid about his battles with alcohol and prescription medication. During a 2021 interview on the Diary of a CEO podcast, he shared:

“I was worried how far my rock bottom was going to be. Where’s rock bottom for me? And you would never have seen it. I’m very good at hiding it. No one would ever have seen it.”

He also revealed experiencing “suicidal ideation” during troubling times while touring with the band.

Following his death, a source informed Page Six that the musician had been “cycling through periods of destructive behavior for a long time. He was transparent about his struggles but occasionally minimized them. His challenges were far more significant than he acknowledged.”

Liam Payne’s death occurred shortly after his ex-fiancee, Maya Henry, issued a cease and desist order against him for allegedly attempting to contact her family and friends repeatedly.

He is survived by his seven-year-old son, Bear, whom he shares with former partner Cheryl Cole.
