They concluded their tribute by extending their condolences to Payne’s family, friends, and fans, promising that Liam’s legacy would be “cherished forever.”
From 2010 until their hiatus in 2016, Payne and his bandmates enjoyed significant success as One Direction. Following their temporary split, both the group and Payne pursued their individual music paths. Below, we delve into some significant events that characterized Liam Payne’s journey post-One Direction.
Days Before His Death, Liam Payne Was Reportedly Dropped by Capitol Records
According to the Daily Mail, just days before his untimely passing, Liam Payne was let go by Universal Music Group. The musician had inked a deal with the label in July 2016, shortly after One Direction halted their group activities.
During his tenure with One Direction, Payne was initially signed to Sony. Later, he transitioned to Capitol Records, which is associated with Universal Music Group.
Under Capitol, he released his solo debut album titled LP1 in 2019. Unfortunately, the album did not receive favorable reviews and struggled commercially, peaking at number 17 on the UK album chart before plummeting out of the top 50 within a week.
Additionally, reports suggest that Payne was dismissed by the label ahead of his anticipated second album release, with the Daily Mail highlighting that, despite a substantial advance, the artist did not recoup the amount.
Following his death, Universal Music Group mourned his loss through a social media post, stating:
“We are heartbroken by the sudden loss of Liam Payne. His contributions to music and the impact he had on countless fans will be remembered. Our heartfelt condolences go out to Liam’s loved ones.”
In addition, it was reported that Payne’s publicist had quit just a month prior to his death.
Exploring Liam Payne’s Two Major Hits After Leaving One Direction
Among the notable successes of Liam Payne’s solo career was his collaboration with singer and actress Rita Ora on the track For You.
Released on January 5, 2018, through Universal Studios and Republic Records, the song served as the lead single from the soundtrack of Fifty Shades Freed. It was also included in both Ora’s second album, Phoenix (2018), and Payne’s LP1 (2019).
The track For You became the first collaboration between Payne and Ora to top the charts in Germany, while also securing a spot in the top five in several countries, including Austria, Portugal, France, and Switzerland. It peaked at number eight in the UK as well.
Rita Ora and Liam Payne shared a close friendship, and within hours of his passing, Ora honored him by performing For You at a concert in Osaka, Japan.
As she sang, Ora struggled with her emotions and looked toward the sky, expressing,
“I can’t even sing this right now.”
She also penned a tribute letter on X, saying:
“I am heartbroken. He had the kindest soul that I will always remember. Working with him was a delight, both on and off the stage. This shocking news breaks my heart. Sending all my love and prayers to his family and close ones. Our song For You holds a whole new significance for me now. R.I.P,”she wrote.
Another significant track from Liam Payne’s post-One Direction career was his debut single, Strip That Down. Featuring rapper Quavo, the song was released on May 19, 2017, under the banners of Capitol Records and Republic Records. Ed Sheeran co-wrote and provided uncredited background vocals for the track.
Strip That Down climbed into the top five across several regions, including Australia, Ireland, New Zealand, and the UK, and achieved a peak position of 10 on the US Billboard Hot 100.
Liam Payne’s Kidney Infection Forced Tour Cancellation
In 2023, Liam Payne was compelled to cancel his South American tour due to a kidney infection that necessitated hospitalization. He informed his followers via a now-deleted Instagram post, explaining that doctors advised him to rest for recovery.
“I’ve been hospitalized for a serious kidney infection; it’s truly terrible, and the doctors have insisted that I rest and recuperate. I was really looking forward to performing for you. To everyone who purchased tickets, I apologize sincerely,”he conveyed.
In the announcement video, Payne clarified that this health issue prevented him from traveling and stated:
“I’ve got the best support team back home, helping me recover, but we’ll have to find a new schedule for the tour.”
