Warning! This post contains SPOILERS for Star Wars: Legacy of Vader #1
Star Wars continues to explore themes of legacy and redemption, highlighting a contradiction inherent in Kylo Ren’s character. In the aftermath of The Last Jedi, it becomes evident that one of his notable lines—a call for Rey to “let the past die”—is not as straightforward as it seems. While Ben Solo attempts to abandon the identities tied to his lineage, a deeper journey unfolds in the new Kylo Ren series, questioning his sincerity as the galaxy’s Supreme Leader.
In Legacy of Vader #1, penned by Charles Soule and illustrated by Luke Ross, Kylo Ren returns to assert his position as Supreme Leader of the First Order, adopting a defiant stance against the Resistance whom he blames for Snoke’s demise. Despite this facade of power, Kylo grapples with the remnants of his past, prompting a pilgrimage to Darth Vader’s castle on Mustafar. This journey symbolizes his struggle to redefine himself apart from his origins as Ben Solo and to explore what it means to be “free” from those legacies.

Kylo Ren’s mission to obliterate his past, beginning with the legacy of his grandfather, is met with unexpected resistance. A surviving servant of Vader, Vaneé, challenges Kylo’s intentions, unveiling an alternative perspective on the weight of legacy.
Despite His Words to Rey, Kylo Ren Struggled to Kill The Past
He Couldn’t Let It Die

Despite portraying outward confidence and encouraging Rey to forsake her past, it becomes apparent that Ben Solo’s own inner turmoil regarding his legacy is unresolved. Following his assertion of leadership over the First Order, Kylo finds himself adrift, confronting the remnants of Vader’s mask. This pivotal moment serves as a stark reminder of the oppressive legacy he wishes to obliterate.
Kylo’s determination to eradicate all ties to his past, particularly his relation to Darth Vader, leads him to Mustafar—a volcanic world deeply entwined with his family’s history. The fortress of Vader, a potent symbol of his heritage, becomes a focal point for Kylo’s desire to sever these bonds. However, upon reaching the fortress, an unexpected development occurs: a drop of his blood grants him access to the castle, where he encounters Vaneé, the caretaker, now a disembodied head connected to a droid.

Learning From His Grandfather, Darth Vader

Vaneé enlightens Kylo about Darth Vader’s approach to his past, revealing that Vader harnessed his experiences and emotions to fuel his power. Rather than extinguishing the past, Vaneé proposes an unconventional path for Kylo, inviting him to embrace his heritage as a source of strength. This pivotal choice marks a turning point for Kylo Ren, who opts to learn from the legacy of his grandfather rather than mournfully attempting to eradicate it, providing fertile ground for character development in future story arcs.
Star Wars: Legacy of Vader #1 is currently available from Marvel Comics, offering fans an intriguing glimpse into Kylo Ren’s evolving relationship with his past.
