Lenovo has officially unveiled its next-generation handheld gaming device, the Legion Go 2, which will be powered by AMD’s latest Ryzen Z2 and Z2 Extreme processors, designed specifically for gaming enthusiasts.

This new addition follows Lenovo’s initial foray into the handheld gaming sphere with the Legion Go and Legion Go S. The original Legion Go was notable for featuring the stelar AMD Ryzen Z1 Extreme chip, while its sibling, the Legion Go S, catered to those on a budget with the Ryzen Z2 Go chipset. The upcoming Legion Go 2 is set to deliver significant enhancements across several dimensions.

The design of the Legion Go 2 is not only more ergonomic but also visually appealing compared to its predecessor. This handheld device maintains versatility with its detachable joysticks, which allow gamers to switch between modes: a traditional console experience using a controller dock or a PC-like feel with the FPS stick. Essentially, it operates as a 3-in-1 device, functioning as a handheld, a tablet, or even a laptop.

On the specifications front, the Legion Go 2 will be available with the robust AMD Ryzen Z2 Extreme chipset, offering multiple configuration options including other Ryzen Z2 models. The Z2 Extreme leverages Strix Point APUs featuring RDNA 3.5 graphics with 16 compute units, while the standard Ryzen Z2 uses Hawk APUs with RDNA 3 graphics and 12 compute units. Both processors consist of 8 cores and 16 threads—with the Z2 Extreme utilizing the latest Zen 5 architecture and the Z2 operating on older Zen 4 architecture.

Another highlight is its 1200P OLED display, boasting refresh rates up to 144Hz, a maximum brightness of 500 nits (True Black 1000 HDR), and a convenient 16:10 aspect ratio with a native landscape orientation. In comparison, the previous model featured a 1600p IPS display also at 144Hz.

Memory and storage capabilities have seen substantial upgrades as well: the Legion Go 2 is equipped with 32 GB of LPDDR5X-8000 memory, a leap from the 16 GB of LPDDR5X-7500 found in its predecessor, alongside a 1 TB PCIe SSD and an expandable microSD option supporting up to 2 TB.

Additionally, improvements to the cooling system are evident with a larger fan that promotes better airflow, complemented by substantial exhaust vents at both the bottom and back. Lenovo also introduced controls to manually manage this cooling system. The battery has received a notable upgrade too, now at 74Whr, up from the prior 49.2Whr, and the device is bundled with a 65W AC Adapter. Other enhancements include a fingerprint reader conveniently located on the rear.

I/O options on the Legion Go 2 comprise a USB 4.0 Type-C port (supporting DP 2.0 and PD 3.0), a combo audio jack, and an additional USB 4.0 Type-C port coupled with a microSD card reader positioned at the bottom.

Although specific details regarding pricing and availability remain undisclosed, previous models like the Legion Go “Z1 Extreme”launched around $700-$800, suggesting a similar price point for the Legion Go 2. More concrete information is expected to emerge in the near future.
