South Korea mourns the loss of renowned trot singer Song Dae-kwan, who passed away on February 7 at the age of 78. The beloved artist was famous for his many hits, including “Sunny Day“and “Four Beats“.
A Life of Music
With over five decades in the music industry, Song became a central figure in Korea’s trot genre. He breathed life into the culture through his music, resonating deeply with fans. Tragically, he was hospitalized due to serious health issues prior to his passing. Song’s agency, Starlineup Entertainment, revealed that he suffered from cardiac arrest at Seoul National University Hospital after his health declined rapidly.
Health Challenges
In the weeks leading up to his death, Song had faced significant health struggles. Reports indicated that he had undergone multiple surgeries, and it was alleged that he was battling the effects of bile duct cancer from prior years. Although he had recovered from that diagnosis, the details surrounding his health remained uncertain.
His funeral is scheduled for Sunday at the same hospital, and he will be interred at Seoul Memorial Park. As fans gather to pay their respects, the impact of his music on the trot landscape cannot be understated.

A Legacy in Trot Music
Born on June 2, 1946, in North Jeolla Province, Song Dae-kwan made his music debut in 1967 with “The Kind Man.”His breakthrough moment came in 1975 with the popular “Sunny Day.”Over the years, he released numerous successful tracks including “Popular Song“and “One Ticket, ”affirming his status within the trot genre.
Often labeled as one of the “Four Kings of Trot“alongside other notable artists, Song Dae-kwan’s influence is deeply ingrained in the heart of trot music. After a short pause during the 1980s, due to limited theatrical opportunities abroad, he made a triumphant return in 1989 with the hit “Because of Love.”
