Fresh revelations regarding what could be the AMD APU for the upcoming PlayStation 6 or next-generation Xbox have emerged, presenting intriguing details about its CPU core arrangement and memory architecture.
In a recent YouTube video from Moore’s Law is Dead, a new AMD APU dubbed ‘Magnus’ has come to light. This impressive APU boasts a substantial 264mm² graphics die and operates on a 384-bit memory bus, which stands wider than any memory configuration currently available, including the 320-bit bus found in the Xbox Series X. The Magnus APU is designed with a Bridge Die linking it to a 144mm² system on a chip (SoC) die, illustrating a unique square structure that piques interest. Of equal note is its unusual CPU setup, featuring 11 cores, composed of three Zen 6 cores and eight Zen 6 C cores.
Initially, the specifications suggested that the Magnus might target mid-range gaming laptops, as previously speculated by Moore’s Law is Dead. However, subsequent investigations revealed that Magnus was not listed under typical client segments like the Medusa Point APUs, but rather for the semicustom business unit that develops APUs specifically for consoles. Comparatively, codenames from this sector linked to known systems include ‘Mero, ’ the power behind the Steam Deck, and ‘Jupiter, ’ rumored to be associated with a forthcoming PlayStation handheld device. Given these naming conventions and the design similarities to those conceptualized by Mark Cerny, along with the distinctive configurations aiming for high-performance gaming at 120 Hz, it strongly suggests that Magnus could indeed be the PlayStation 6 APU.
A Dual Possibility: PlayStation 6 or Next-Gen Xbox?
While indications largely point toward the Magnus APU potentially powering the PlayStation 6, there remains a viable argument for it being the next-generation Xbox APU. Renowned AMD leaker Kepler_L2 shared insights on X, casting doubt on the Magnus codename aligning with PlayStation’s established naming conventions. He warned that the overall design appears too lavish to fit within Mark Cerny’s typically conservative die area philosophy. Since the Xbox Series X features a wider memory bus than the PlayStation 5, the 384-bit bus utilized by Magnus could suggest a strong connection to the forthcoming Xbox console.
That is probably the next-gen Xbox, the codenames that AMD uses for Playstation SoCs are from Shakespeare characters.
