The God of War series has experienced a remarkable revival in recent years, fueled by the immense success of its Norse-themed titles, including the critically acclaimed God of War (2018) and God of War Ragnarok (2022), along with the subsequent Valhalla DLC released in 2023. Both gameplay and storytelling have resonated deeply with fans, highlighting the poignant relationship between Kratos and his son, Atreus. As a result of this resurgence, Sony and Santa Monica Studio are exploring multiple new projects that may feature Kratos and Atreus or venture into entirely new territories. Among the waves of speculation about remakes of the classic entries and stories centered around Atreus, fresh rumors of an Egypt-based game have surfaced, raising the possibility of adapting the 2021 comic God of War: Fallen God.
Understanding God of War: Fallen God

Set after Kratos’ destruction of the Greek pantheon depicted in God of War 3, Fallen God chronicles the journey of the Ghost of Sparta as he seeks to shed the burden of the Blades of Chaos and escape Greece for a new life in ancient Egypt. While traversing the arid Egyptian landscape for months, Kratos encounters the ghost of Athena once more. Athena implores him to return to Greece and face his destiny, but Kratos chooses to continue his journey. Upon discovering a welcoming village, he finds himself defending it against a colossal crocodile-like creature, the Chaos Beast. Engaging the beast with his bare hands, Kratos defeats it, but not without attracting the attention of an even larger, hippo-like monster. After a fierce battle with this new foe, he is eventually assisted by Athena and Thoth, the Egyptian god of magic and wisdom, who encourages him to embrace his destiny. After a brief exchange, Kratos, wielding his Chaos Blades, successfully defeats the hippo-like creature, and Thoth wishes him well on his journey away from Egypt.
Writer Chris Roberson, who penned God of War: Fallen God, also contributed to the 2018 Dark Horse comic series, which serves as a prequel to the 2018 game.
Exploring the Possibilities of an Egypt-Based Prequel

Since the release of God of War in 2018, hints about Kratos’ potential interactions with Egyptian mythology have been abundant. During their adventures in Tyr’s vault, Kratos, Atreus, and Mimir discover various Egyptian artifacts, with Mimir mentioning their origins from a desert land teeming with gods. While the references to Egypt were less pronounced in God of War Ragnarok, Tyr does appear in the Valhalla DLC, wielding an Egyptian khopesh. Current rumors suggest that Sony may be auditioning Middle Eastern actors for a game focused on this rich and vibrant mythology, indicating significant potential for exploration in an Egypt-set God of War title.
If this rumored game serves as a prequel that adapts elements from Fallen God, it could further explore the narrative threads between Kratos’ Greek origins and the Norse saga. The return of Terrence C. Carson as Kratos would add depth to the Ghost of Sparta’s evolution, while integrating formidable Egyptian beasts, such as griffins and mummies, alongside the crocodile and hippo adversaries from the comic. Players might also witness Kratos distancing himself from the Blades of Chaos amid a swell of new mythological foes.
A Potential Expanded Narrative for an Egypt Prequel
This anticipated God of War prequel could begin in the aftermath of God of War 3, showcasing a tumultuous Greece and a wounded Kratos who is uncertain of his path following his devastating revenge. Upon landing in Egypt, he could repeatedly encounter Thoth, who calls upon him to confront and challenge the monstrous creations of vengeful gods. The narrative could take Kratos through various Egyptian afterlife realms, such as Aaru and Duat, where Thoth encourages him to wield his godly powers for noble purposes. Despite this, Kratos might ultimately choose to reject a heroic identity and instead seek a place of solitude, leaving room for profound character development and exploration of his complex psyche.
