Exploring the Lala Barina: A Challenging Spider Monster in Monster Hunter Wilds
While spider monsters in the Monster Hunter series have never been my favorite, the intricate equipment and weapons crafted to combat them have always intrigued me. Recently, at Capcom’s headquarters, I had the opportunity to face the latest arachnid threat, the Lala Barina, multiple times. Whether during regular play sessions or while grinding for equipment, this encounter has quickly become a standout experience for me in Monster Hunter Wilds.
Introduction to the Lala Barina
The third official trailer for Monster Hunter Wilds offers a glimpse into the game, showcasing the Lala Barina after biologist Erik from Olivia’s Ace Team discovers its poisonous florets near a vivid red river. While I won’t delve into spoilers, these florets are significant—they contain a paralyzing toxin that plays a pivotal role in both the campaign and in combat against this fearsome monster.

Exploring the Environment of the Forbidden Lands
Every encounter with Lala Barina, whether during story missions or free exploration in the Forbidden Lands, began at its nest. The environment cleverly guides players toward this location. Following that blood-red river will lead you right to the creature’s lair. And yes, as unexpected as it seems, I was there for the spider’s mucus!
The Quest for Unique Equipment
My time with the Lala Barina revealed my fondness for the spider-themed gear and weapons in the series. This time, however, I had my sights set on crafting a stunning long, white shirt adorned with red petal accents, which required Lala Barina Mucus to complete. Unfortunately, my attempts to obtain it turned into a five-battle saga, marking quite the grind session. With the game’s release rapidly approaching, I aimed to secure a full set in time to face Uth Duna.
The Fight: A Test of Skill
My encounters with the Lala Barina spotlighted the challenging dynamics of this preview build (subject to change). Initially, players find the monster dozing from the ceiling in a water-laden nest. During this phase, the creature releases batches of florets designed to paralyze, necessitating swift maneuvering around them to reach the beast. This first part of the battle is relatively straightforward, with the main hazards being the occasional floret and its leaps.
As the battle progresses and Lala Barina’s health depletes, it escapes the confines of its nest, prompting a chase. This phase elevated the difficulty, as other creatures roamed the Scarlet Forest, adding layers to evasive tactics while contending with the monster’s agility.
Final Stages of the Hunt
In the closing stages of the hunt, the Lala Barina retreats once again to its nest, employing the terrain to its advantage by utilizing the ceiling and walls to evade attacks. Interestingly, during this period, the use of florets diminished, possibly due to my strategic targeting of the monster’s weak spots earlier in the fight.
Throughout my initial four encounters, utilizing the Long Sword proved effective, allowing me to maintain pressure on the spider while dealing swift damage. The paralyzing effect of its florets marked the Lala Barina as one of the more formidable challenges in the game thus far. I truly hope that the excitement of this hunt carries over into the final release.
