Lady Gaga Initially Believed Michael Polansky’s Proposal Was an April Fool’s Joke

Lady Gaga shared insight into why she believed businessman Michael Polansky’s marriage proposal on April Fool’s Day might have been a joke. In the September 27 episode of The Graham Norton Show, the multi-talented singer and actress discussed her engagement while promoting her upcoming movie, Joker: Folie a Deux. She explained:

“He proposed on April first and I thought he was joking.”

Gaga further elaborated that her engagement gained media attention after she inadvertently referred to Polansky as her “fiancé”during her conversation with French Prime Minister Gabriel Attal at the Olympics. Lady Gaga mentioned to host Graham Norton that she initially wanted the engagement to remain a “secret,”but her slip of the tongue made it a trending topic.

For those unaware, Lady Gaga performed by the Seine River during the opening ceremony of the 2024 Paris Olympic Games. French PM Gabriel Attal was present in the stands when he shared a TikTok video featuring the moment where the singer introduced Michael Polansky, saying:

“This is my fiancé, Michael.”

Although Lady Gaga initially wished to keep her engagement under wraps, she felt the need to discuss the proposal after it became public. Vogue’s October issue, released on September 5, 2024, provided a glimpse into how the proposal occurred. The feature stated:

“She and Michael Polansky, her companion of nearly five years, got engaged in April after a day of rock climbing.”

The singer also shared how she met her fiancé, mentioning that her mother, Cynthia Germanotta, met Michael Polansky first and later told her, “I think I just met your husband.”To this, Gaga reported that she replied she was “not ready to meet [her] husband.”

While the timeline of Gaga’s mother’s encounter with Polansky remains unclear, it was in December 2019 when the singer met Polansky at the 40th birthday celebration of Sean Parker, the co-founder of Napster and former Facebook president.

Engagement rumors surrounding the couple began circulating as early as April 2024, especially after Lady Gaga was seen sporting a significant diamond on her left ring finger multiple times. She showcased this impressive engagement ring during the Venice International Film Festival on September 3, just before her film Joker: Folie a Deux premiered at the event, earning an 11-minute standing ovation.

In her appearance on The Graham Norton Show, Gaga also talked about her role as Harley Quinn, also known as Lee, in Joker: Folie a Deux. She expressed her endeavor to “root [for] her”in reality and praised the film’s unique blend of psychological thriller and musical genres. The singer-actress described the upcoming film as both humorous and dramatic, highlighting its incorporation of dance and music. She remarked that it “breaks genre in many ways.”

Scheduled for release in US theaters on October 4, 2024, Lady Gaga’s Joker: Folie a Deux features a screenplay by Scott Silver and is directed by Todd Phillips. The film continues to explore the story of Joaquin Phoenix’s Arthur Fleck, who finds music and love while incarcerated at Arkham State Hospital.
