Kristian Nairn Explains Why Hodor Thinks Game of Thrones Finale Did Not Deserve the Backlash

The conclusion of Game of Thrones has become a reference point for unfavorable endings, as the popular HBO series did not meet the high expectations of its vast fanbase. Since its conclusion, Game of Thrones has been cited as an example of projects that started strong but ultimately delivered disappointing closures.

Many, including several actors from the set, have concurred that the series did not wrap up in a manner to be proud of. However, Kristian Nairn, known for his role as Hodor, expressed in a recent interview that he does not share the fans’ negative assessment of the eighth season’s conclusion.

Following the release of his memoir, Beyond the Throne: Epic Journeys, Enduring Friendships, and Surprising Tales, Kristian Nairn shared his perspective on the final season in an interview with Screenrant, stating:

“It’s not perfect, no… But also keep in mind I’m not a scriptwriter, neither are 99.99% of people. There are some who think they are, but I do know I’m not, so I have that. So [the response] disappointed me really.”

He further elaborated:

“It disappointed me because the show had been held in such high regard, and I don’t think it deserved it. I don’t think there was a way they could have ended it to keep people happy.”

Nairn also discussed the backlash surrounding Daenerys (played by Emilia Clarke) and her character development, noting that he foresaw this reaction coming.

One major point of contention in the final season was Daenerys’ character arc, culminating in her attempt to incinerate King’s Landing and its inhabitants. Fans criticized this transformation, arguing that the Mother of Dragons acted significantly out of character during the closing episodes.

However, according to Nairn, indications of this shift were present from earlier in the series. He commented:

“Although people say that Daenerys acted out of character and stuff and so quickly, but I just don’t understand how they didn’t see that throughout the show. I was waiting for it to happen the whole way. The signs were there guys. She actually said at one stage that as soon as Drogon’s big enough, she’s going to burn the ass out of King’s Landing.”

This moment indeed occurred in Game of Thrones, and retrospectively, it seems Nairn’s reflections on Daenerys’ declarations hold true.

The actor further differentiated his criticisms of the final season, suggesting that longer episodes could have been substituted with additional episodes to enhance the quality of the last two seasons. He concluded his reflections on Game of Thrones by expressing his wish that fans had found more joy in the finale. He remarked:

“I just wish people were happier with it, because I really enjoyed it,…The scenes with Peter [Dinklage] walking through the rubble and people said, ‘oh God, I really wanted Cersei to get a really horrible death.’ And what about their death? It was like a Renaissance painting. It was art.”

Unfortunately, altering the prevailing perception of Game of Thrones now seems challenging. Nonetheless, House of the Dragon, currently airing, may help to mend some fans’ feelings towards the franchise.
