The long-awaited sequel to King Kong vs. Godzilla presents a thrilling opportunity for the Monsterverse to reignite the legendary rivalry between these iconic titans, albeit several decades later. Initially, the 1962 classic was the only film featuring both the King of Monsters and the King of Skull Island. However, following the release of two additional films since 2021, fans can anticipate another clash in 2026 with the upcoming untitled sequel titled Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire.
By 2026, the collaboration of Godzilla and Kong on the big screen will be quite remarkable, especially when compared to their cinematic history before the Monsterverse era. Aside from the pivotal King Kong vs. Godzilla, Toho—the original owner of the Godzilla franchise—only produced one more King Kong feature during their reign, with a number of other projects never making it off the drawing board. The successes of the Monsterverse have finally allowed some of these long-cherished concepts to potentially come to life.
Toho Almost Produced A King Kong vs. Godzilla Sequel Featuring A Giant Scorpion
The Giant Scorpion Was Considered as a Replacement for the Octopus

During the brief five years that Toho held the rights to King Kong, the character appeared in two films, including the iconic King Kong vs. Godzilla and the lesser-known King Kong Escapes, which featured Gorosaurus and Mechani-Kong. Plans for a direct sequel titled Continuation: King Kong vs. Godzilla were also in the pipeline, intending to follow up on the original film’s climactic showdown, which ended with Godzilla’s defeat. This sequel would have introduced a giant scorpion as an antagonistic creature.
Similar to the encounter with a giant octopus in the original, this sequel planned to showcase an earlier battle between Kong and the scorpion before the main confrontation. In a dramatic twist, the scorpion’s stinger aimed for Kong’s throat, only for the mighty ape to seize its tail, leading to a decisive victory for King Kong.
Unfortunately, the project faced cancellation, potentially due to the similarity of its ideas to the original King Kong vs. Godzilla, as highlighted in John LeMay’s authoritative text, The Big Book of Giant Japanese Monster Movies: The Lost Films. Given these parallels, Toho may have determined the sequel lacked originality.
How Godzilla: King of the Monsters Implied the Existence of a Scorpion Titan
Could a Scorpion Titan Reside Beneath an Ancient Temple in Turkey?

In an intriguing turn of events, the Monsterverse version of King Kong might coexist with a giant scorpion. Cryptic coordinates revealed in Godzilla: King of the Monsters point to Gobleki Tepe, an archaeological marvel in Turkey believed to be one of the world’s oldest temples, dating back around 12,000 years. The temple’s ruins feature scorpion depictions, lending significance to these coordinates within the Monsterverse framework.
The ancient inhabitants of this region could have been aware of a scorpion Titan residing nearby, possibly explaining the temple’s existence. As established in King of the Monsters, humans revered Titans; thus, it’s conceivable that this site served as a worship space for a scorpion Titan, potentially viewed as a god by those ancient cultures.
Moreover, the narrative suggests this Titan may pose a significant threat, as indicated by lines following the coordinates, hinting that the creature’s awakening might lead to civilization’s downfall. If this reference is intentional, it could foreshadow future events in the Monsterverse.
Godzilla x Kong’s Sequel Might Tribute the Cancelled Movie’s King Kong Clash
Could Kong Confront a Scorpion Titan in the Monsterverse?

A threat capable of “sending civilization into collapse”is an ideal candidate for a future Monsterverse antagonist. The unidentified scorpion Titan might be dormant, resting beneath its ancient shrine where it was once venerated. Events within the ongoing Monsterverse timeline, or perhaps occurrences at the onset of the Godzilla x Kong sequel, could ultimately awaken this formidable creature, igniting the catastrophic events hinted at in King of the Monsters’ climax.
If this scorpion Titan were to emerge within Kong’s world of Hollow Earth, a conflict with its alpha, Kong, could ensue. Such an encounter could propel the sequel’s narrative forward. This scenario mirrors the structure of prior Monsterverse films, which often feature build-up battles before the major showdown. For instance, Godzilla x Kong showcased several confrontations leading to the heroes’ alliance against new enemies.
Introducing a scorpion as a villainous force against Kong not only pays homage to the scrapped Godzilla-King Kong crossover but also marks a significant first for the franchise, as there has never been a giant scorpion in the Godzilla lore. With a rich history of foes inspired by real creatures, this addition could offer a fresh and exciting dynamic to the Monsterverse, showcasing new threats that await our beloved titans.
