Korean Authorities Investigate YouTuber for Spreading Misinformation

The recent discovery of dismembered bodies in South Korea has prompted a significant investigation by the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency into a YouTuber known as Debo-chan, who is accused of disseminating misleading information about these grave incidents. The National Police Agency released an official statement on November 5, 2025, detailing the inquiry led by the cyber investigation unit.

Debo-chan’s Content and Controversial Claims

Debo-chan, a YouTuber with nearly 960, 000 subscribers and based in Japan, uploaded a controversial video titled “The problem of murders and organ trafficking committed by criminal Chinese nationals who recently entered Korea without visas is becoming serious”on October 22. In this video, he made alarming claims regarding the discovery of 37 dismembered bodies, along with assertions about an additional 150 cases purportedly under confidential investigation. These assertions lack credible verification and sharply conflict with information provided by South Korean authorities.

Impact on Public Perception

The video quickly gained traction, circulating widely across Japanese social media and online communities, leading to widespread public concern regarding safety in South Korea. Numerous posts fueled fears about the country’s deteriorating public safety, warning potential travelers against visiting. The spread of this misinformation has significantly affected the perception of safety among the public and could have repercussions for South Korea’s reputation abroad.

Law Enforcement Response

Korean police have classified this behavior as a serious offense, emphasizing that spreading false information not only incites public anxiety but also undermines social order and damages the nation’s international standing. Law enforcement officials expressed apprehension that such misinformation could dissuade international visitors and hinder foreign investment in South Korea.

Debo-chan’s Defense and Further Actions

In response to the investigation, Debo-chan uploaded a video clarifying his stance on November 5, asserting that he merely relayed comments made by Korean users regarding incidents reported in the media, without the intention to mislead. He indicated that his intention was to showcase various viewpoints but recognized the issues his content had caused for South Korea. Consequently, he decided to remove all videos related to the country, including some that were critical in nature.

Ongoing Investigation by Authorities

Authorities are actively looking into Debo-chan’s nationality and location, collaborating with YouTube to gather necessary information. Further, they are contemplating charges under the Framework Act on Telecommunications, which prohibits the distribution of false information through electronic channels. This ongoing investigation aims to verify the facts surrounding Debo-chan’s claims and their far-reaching effects on public sentiment and safety in South Korea.
