Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 Quest Guide: Necessary Evil Tips and Walkthrough

After concluding your business with Nebakov, Henry’s next mission involves interrogating a captured bandit in the notorious Trosky dungeon, the same location where Hans was held during the Necessary Evil quest.

Your first step is to discuss your interrogation approach with Capon concerning the bandit prisoner at Trosky Castle. Although Hans may appear brash with Lord von Bergow, both he and Henry have reservations about employing heavy-handed tactics during this questioning. Nevertheless, they are tasked with extracting information by any means necessary.

Once the discussion wraps up, equip your highest charisma outfit—mine boasted a score of 22 thanks to jewelry—and follow Hans to the dungeon’s cellars. Once you reach the torture chamber, interact with the door handle to initiate the interrogation scene. Bear in mind that your choices during this segment will often be time-sensitive; however, you are allowed to pause the game to take your time if needed.

Note: This quest becomes significantly more manageable if you successfully glean the bandit’s plan during your visit to Nebakov. If you wish to start with that knowledge, consider loading a previous save to revisit the Back in the Saddle quest, as it can be completed fairly quickly if you know what you’re doing.

If you’re entering without knowledge of the plan, prepare to use intimidation to gather the information you seek. From my experience, equipping a strong outfit yielded a 15 in intimidation, sufficient to extract vital information from the prisoner.

Interrogation Strategies for Maximum Information

Initially, the prisoner displays a defiant attitude. When he inquires about your identity, introduce yourself as Henry and Hans, adopting a good-cop persona. Begin the interrogation by attempting to take a non-violent approach, then shift your focus to the tongs located on the barrel to your left.

Inquire about the identity of the bandit leader. If he continues to resist, you can either leverage your charisma or draw upon information acquired from previous quests. If you meticulously followed our guide in the Back in the Saddle quest, you’ll have access to two advantageous conversation options, beginning with, “We already know that anyway, ” referencing the bandit leader known as “Captain” during your discussions with Nebakov.

If you lack this information, you will need to rely on intimidation. Using the tools will substantially affect your reputation with Hans, but it may be the only option if intimidation fails.

As you persist, you will start to weaken the prisoner’s resolve, prompting him to mention a name: Jan.

Next, ask the prisoner where the band is currently hiding, keeping in mind that they have already taken over the fort.

Lastly, draw upon Henry’s personal vendetta by asking about a man named Istvan Toth. At this juncture, you have the option to either utilize torture tools or continue using your charisma and knowledge. With a charisma score of 20, I was able to coax him into revealing that Toth is indeed with the bandits, although he doesn’t possess any information regarding your swords, leaving you with the opportunity to drop that line of questioning to maintain your standing with Hans.

Your next query should concern the bandit leader’s background. If your intimidation attempts fall short, you may have to resort to torture tools once again. The prisoner reveals that the leader is a nobleman who professes to care for the local populace, although he admits to knowing little else.

Your subsequent inquiry should address the local support underpinning the militia’s efforts. Again, you might find yourself forced to employ torture if your earlier efforts don’t pan out. Successfully passing an intimidation check with a score of 16 will lead to the prisoner implicating Olda, Lord Semine’s younger son, as the one harboring the bandits.

When you finally question him about your ambush, he responds defiantly, stating that you deserved it, much like others in service to von Bergow. You can counter that you do not serve the Lord, but rather represent a message of peace. At this point, should you continue with punishment, you risk exhausting all avenues of inquiry, so it may be wise to conclude the interrogation to avoid losing favor with Hans.

After concluding the interrogation, you face a pivotal decision: should you inform von Bergow about the potential betrayal involving Lord Semine? If you followed the Blacksmith’s path to the wedding, the citizens of Semine may be among allies you’ve formed through prior quests. Yet, withholding this information might pose risks if the truth later emerges.

Deciding Whether to Inform von Bergow about Semine

If you opt to inform Lord von Bergow about Semine:

  • This will set you on a path that compels a choice between siding with Lord Semine and his cronies or Hashek the Burgrave.
  • Both trajectories will culminate in the sacking and burning of Semine Manor.
  • Siding with Semine results in Hashek’s demise, necessitating lies to von Bergow regarding the battle.
  • Selecting Hashek, to any extent, leads to fatalities involving Gnarly, Agnes (the Bailiff’s daughter), and others from Semine under violent circumstances.

If you choose to conceal Semine’s involvement:

  • The Necessary Evil quest concludes, allowing you to transition smoothly to subsequent story arcs.
  • The manor remains intact, providing its characters the chance for a different outcome.

Interestingly, at this juncture, consider that your mission alongside Henry and Hans is to negotiate a deal with von Bergow for Radzig and Hanush, so opposing him could jeopardize these objectives. However, it’s also valid to reflect on how poorly Trosky Castle has treated you, warranting a more cautious approach to your revelations.

In light of the brutal nature of the Burgrave’s assault on Semine, I believe that misinforming Lord von Bergow about Semine’s role constitutes the more honorable path, as it shields innocent friends and allies. Conversely, if you are seeking a more dramatic narrative filled with difficult moral choices, exposing Semine’s involvement could be appealing.

By confessing that Olda is in cahoots with the bandits, both Lord von Bergow and the Burgrave will become irate. While you may receive a charisma-related option to advocate for the remaining wedding guests, your path leads directly into a conflict where you must choose to ally with either the traitors at Semine or the Burgrave.

Upon confronting the issue in Semine’s inner courtyard, a standoff occurs between the Burgrave, Lord Semine, and Gnarly, escalating to a precarious situation. As tensions mount, you can advocate for a peaceful resolution. Nevertheless, your decision to affirm, “nothing should burn, ” ignites battle, pitting you against the Burgrave and Trosky soldiers.

Upon emerging victorious, you can interrogate the Semines regarding future actions. Olda reiterates that their leader pretends to care for the common folk while disparaging von Bergow. With the Burgrave deceased, it becomes evident that flight is the only option, necessitating the manor’s destruction and compelling Henry and Hans to fabricate their accounts.

Despite Capon’s misgivings, von Bergow is easily swayed by your statements, leading to the next phase of your quest, during which you are invited to meet with vassals to discuss the Nebakov assault.

Alternatively, if you align with Trosky’s knights, confrontation ensues as Lord Semine refuses to surrender his son. The ensuing melee results in Lord Semine being knocked unconscious, with casualties among the ranks, including Captain Gnarly and Agnes, the Bailiff’s daughter.

Your search leads you to Olda at the top of the main tower, where he implores his innocence. You must decide whether to send him for trial or allow him to go free. Failing to send him to trial risks an attack from Hashek and his men. Whichever route you choose, Olda faces execution, and Semine Manor finds itself consumed by flames as a warning to any who might defy von Bergow.

Upon reporting your actions to von Bergow the following morning, you can allow Capon to represent you or directly criticize the Burgrave. Accusing von Bergow that the Burgrave commanded Olda’s execution may provoke his ire, leading to potential reprimands; nonetheless, regardless of your choices, the quest concludes, guiding you onto a familiar path in the For Victory quest!

After the relatively straightforward events of For Victory, anticipate another quest titled Divine Messenger before delving into the choice-centric Finger of God.
