The quest titled Hunger and Despair serves as a pivotal main mission in Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2. In this scenario, Henry and his companions experience overwhelming hunger, which begins to escalate tensions amidst the group.
Although brief, this quest presents notable challenges, primarily due to Henry’s limited resources at this stage of the game. Players must navigate through food acquisition for Hans, safeguard the battlements of Suchdol, and engage in various dialogues with fellow allies.
This comprehensive walkthrough will equip players with essential tips and insights on completing the Hunger and Despair quest.
Locating Food for Hans

The initial goal of the Hunger and Despair quest is to acquire food for Capon. Begin by conversing with Janosh in the dining area, but don’t be surprised when he declines your request for sustenance due to limited supplies.
During this interaction, the Dry Devil intervenes, suggesting a rather grim method of obtaining food by killing a dog. If you prefer a more compassionate approach, rest assured there is an alternate method for securing food.
Crafting Shoe Soup
Engage in conversation with Musa, Godwin, Sam, and Kubyenka, who jest about concocting soup from shoes. Faced with dire hunger, they’re eager to explore this unconventional route. Henry’s task now is to retrieve Lady Frenzl’s shoes.
Head to Lady Frenzl’s room located on the top floor of the castle, marked by an optional waypoint. Inside, you’ll find a chest containing the shoes, but be prepared as it presents a challenging lock to pick.
After securing the shoes, return to Musa and the group. They will aid in transforming the shoes into a makeshift soup, which you will then deliver to Hans. Following this meal, the funeral proceedings for fallen comrades will commence.
Preparing Dog Soup
If you opt for the more ruthless route and decide to procure food by eliminating the dog, this requires only a few precise sword swings or a single arrow to achieve.
The canine can be found roaming in the northern section of Suchdol, as depicted in the accompanying image. Once dispatched, butcher the meat and report back to the Dry Devil to present your catch.
The Dry Devil will then convert this meat into Stray Dog Soup for Hans and yourself. Make your way back to Hans to provide him with the soup, thereby alleviating his hunger. The funeral for your fallen comrades will soon follow.
Defending the Suchdol Battlements
As the funeral unfolds, you assume control of Godwin, delivering a eulogy for the departed soldiers. The dialogue options are straightforward and labeled as easy, allowing players to choose freely without impacting the mission’s outcome.
However, during the ceremony, Suchdol is attacked again, necessitating a quick defense strategy by Henry and his allies. Ascend to the castle’s upper levels and seize the Halberd (Voulge) propped against the wall, which will aid you in repelling enemies by knocking down four ladders while fending off invaders.
Once you have neutralized the ladders, a cutscene will unfold, showcasing enemies breaching the tower, requiring Henry to act swiftly against them. Clear the lower and then upper floors of foes before proceeding to knock down the remaining ladders on the rear wall.
Follow the waypoint directing you to the rear wall and utilize your Halberd to eliminate the last two ladders, concluding this defensive objective.
Farewells Before the Next Chapter

After a brief cutscene outlining your next course of action, you must now say farewell to your allies before heading to the ramparts alongside Samuel. Henry contemplates that this may be his last opportunity to converse with them.
Engage with Hans, Zizka, and Katherine to express your goodbyes, which is crucial to advance the quest. Note that interacting with Katherine twice will ensure that she heals your wounds and replenishes your health.
Finally, proceed to the ramparts and opt to wait. This selection will trigger a cutscene, concluding the Hunger and Despair quest in Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2.
