Successfully achieving her goal not only benefits Betty but also awards Henry with complimentary bathhouse services, providing significant savings over the course of the game.
This guide outlines essential steps to successfully complete the “Ill Repute” quest, ensuring that you capitalize on all available opportunities along the way.
Getting Started with Ill Repute
Following the completion of “A Good Scrub, ” rumors will begin to circulate in Kuttenberg pertaining to Betty’s aspirations for the Municipal Bathhouse title. Engage with various quest tipsters, including bailiffs and innkeepers, throughout the city. Eventually, these whispers will reach Henry, prompting him to visit the Kingfisher Bathhouse located to the southeast.
Upon arrival, Betty sheds light on a new tax initiative being enforced by the councilmen, with only one bathhouse garnering an exemption. Her competitor, Adam, is backed by Councilor Naaz, granting him an undue advantage. Betty solicits Henry’s assistance to shift the odds in her favor.
Disrupting Adam and Naaz
Gathering Information
To undermine Naaz’s influence, Henry should visit Adam’s bathhouse, which is situated southwest of Kuttenberg. Engaging with the female staff can yield important insights:
- Lousy Mary offers a complimentary bath experience in exchange for a drink.
- Katcha reveals a damaging story about Naaz’s history with fleas, but sharing this information necessitates a successful speech check or a bribe.
- Lida can divulge Naaz’s preferred oil but requires a Noblewoman’s Cotchardie, available from a tailor north of the bathhouse.
- Meaty Mary may spill secrets regarding Naaz’s chamomile sensitivity for a bribe or through tough conversation.
In case Henry is detected during these stealthy inquiries, he has an alternative route: he can bribe the Alderman who inspected Betty’s bathhouse, offering 5000 gold to secure her needed backing. The Alderman can be found in proximity to Adam’s bathhouse.
Flea Collection: An Optional Task
Those seeking to create a chaotic scene may wish to gather fleas. While beggars can be sources of information, they may react negatively to inquiries. However, a flea-infested blanket can be located at a beggar camp near Kuttenberg’s Town Hall.
Once acquired, these fleas can be surreptitiously sprinkled into Naaz’s clean laundry or his personal chest located within Adam’s bathhouse. Players must exercise caution, as detection by witnesses could provoke guards.
Theheft of Naaz’s Special Oil (Optional)
Henry has the option to pilfer a special Foreign Fragrant Oil from Adam’s bathhouse. This particular item can be pilfered on the third floor, tucked away in a cabinet behind the first door and the subsequent right door. Note that Henry will be trespassing on this level, so stealth is paramount.
Consider utilizing darkness as a cloak for a successful heist if daylight proves disruptive.
Enhancing Naaz’s Wine with Chamomile (Optional)
Being aware of Naaz’s inclination towards chamomile sensitivity, Henry can choose to adulterate his wine by adding chamomile. The wine is stored on the second floor of Adam’s bathhouse behind a locked door. As this area is guard-monitored, nighttime operations or ensuring the area remains unmonitored are crucial.
Chamomile can be easily procured from the local apothecary in Kuttenberg.
Securing Allies for Betty
After successfully damaging Naaz’s partnership with Adam, Henry must now seek a council ally for Betty. Returning to the Kingfisher Bathhouse will prompt Betty to direct Henry to Councilor Tuchmacher, who operates a shop within central Kuttenberg.
Conversing with Tuchmacher will reveal his requirements—be cautious to refrain from mentioning Betty during this discussion.
Tuchmacher will require a substitute for an upcoming duel, and Henry must consent to participate on his behalf, adhering to a few constraints. Notably, armor is prohibited during the duel, although wearing clothing for minor protection is acceptable. Players can choose from a flail, a mace, or a hunting sword as their weapons, while Jan, the opponent, faces no such limitations unless Henry persuades him to forgo his armor through a challenging speech check.
If Jan falls in battle, the quest will come to an unsuccessful end. Players should be mindful of their damage levels, avoiding headshots if they’re skilled in that area. Enhancing combat performance with potions like Artemisia or Buck’s Blood can be beneficial. Furthermore, honing skills in blocking and counterattacks will be essential to dominate the duel without excessive threat. Consider applying poison to your weapon with Bane for a potential swift victory, as it will drain Jan’s health gradually.
With victory at hand, Tuchmacher consents to support Betty, ultimately granting her another critical vote.
Awaiting the Council’s Verdict
After obtaining Tuchmacher’s backing, it’s time for Henry to report back to Betty. The concluding phase requires players to wait for approximately 3 to 4 in-game days until the Kuttenberg council gathers to announce their decision.
Once the designated time has elapsed, the journal will update automatically. A follow-up conversation with Betty will reveal her triumph, and Henry will be rewarded with unlimited access to bathhouse services for life.
