After their intense experience entangled within the confines of Trosky Castle, Henry and Hans are once again on an adventure, this time en route to the southern stronghold of Nebakov on the orders of Lord Otto von Bergow.
Lord von Bergow aims to assemble an army to confront the notorious bandits terrorizing the region, necessitating support from garrisons at nearby forts.
As Hans’ dedicated bodyguard and confidant, Henry’s mission is to accompany his lord and shield him from danger during this critical journey. Hopefully, this expedition will prove less tumultuous than their previous escapades.
After settling into your new accommodations at the castle and obtaining a fresh steed, rendezvous with Hans to fulfill your responsibilities.
Back in the Saddle Quest Guide
To kick off the quest, initiate a conversation with Hans at the inner gate of Trosky Castle. Then, mount your new horse and set out towards Nebakov. Engage with the chamberlain whenever possible to gain some reputation points, and if your previous interactions with Hans have been positive, opt to respond with care in your discussions.
During your journey, Hans inquires about Bozhena, the herbwoman who helped you recover. Depending on whether you have paid her 150 groschen for her services and completed the Bad Blood quest, there are opportunities to further enhance your reputation.
As you travel, bolster your standing by comforting Hans and accentuating the silver lining in his challenges. When prompted to race, accept the challenge. Your destination is the shrine located beyond Troskowitz, and your success may hinge on your horsemanship skills. If utilizing the new mount from the main quest, anticipate that Hans’s horse may outperform yours.
Once you’ve settled into a more leisurely pace, converse with Hans, and choose how to navigate your relationship, which can be either amiable or contentious. Subsequently, you may either fast travel to your next location or indulge in the scenic countryside.
Upon reaching Nebakov, a discussion with Jaromier ensues before Hans departs for a private talk. Michael will offer you refreshments and a tour of the fortress, during which you can discreetly investigate the burgeoning number of stabled horses at Nebakov.
Investigating the Horse Mystery at Nebakov
Everyone at Nebakov seems unusually cordial—perhaps even too cordial for comfort.

Instead of following Michael immediately, consider venturing to the field to speak with the groom. To maximize your charisma, wear your finest attire before approaching him. Inquire about the horses, but be cautious; he may be hesitant to share details.
If you excel in intimidation, valor, or horsemanship, you can navigate the conversation when he challenges you to a race, urging him for further insights. A horsemanship skill of 17 will reveal that the men at Nebakov faced off against local bandits, ultimately coming away with their horses, raising further questions.

Return to the fortress courtyard and follow Michael to delve deeper into his motives. When pressed about your mission, share that Lord von Bergow intends to confront the bandits, hinting at Michael’s anticipated involvement. As he inquires about Hans, mention his prospective wealth and significance, albeit emphasizing his current status.
Michael will then challenge you to a duel, which you can accept but abstain from actually fighting. If your previous answers have won him over, you can also inquire about the horses’ unusual numbers. He will mention that Jaromier received horses as compensation for inherited land—an explanation that seems to conflict with what the groom had told you. Probing this matter may yield unsatisfactory responses from Michael.

Considering the oddities surrounding you, it is wise to conclude the conversation and head upstairs to the main keep.

Progress inside the wooden structure and sneak into the adjoining room to seize the keys resting on a table.

Ascend to the upper levels where you will encounter a sleeping garrison surrounded by equipment. Ensure to “examine” the items to record this information in your journal and feel free to collect any useful gear within reach.

Next, exit and locate the jail door at the fortress’s base where Guard Hertel is stationed. Wearing your best outfit will benefit your charisma check, allowing you to persuade him that Sir Jaromier requires his attention, prompting him to leave. If unsuccessful, consider utilizing the stealth method of crouching and throwing a rock to distract him.

Once inside, converse with the prisoner, who reveals a shocking truth: he is the genuine Jaromier Nebakov, and the bandits have overtaken the fortress! Agree to inform Lord von Bergow, but you cannot leave without Hans by your side.
Taking the Lord’s advice, wait near your horses until their meeting concludes to avoid drawing unwanted attention. Fortunately, as you remain undetected, Hans will be released to the paddock. Share your discoveries with him, then make your escape as swiftly as possible.

Upon returning to Trosky, promptly inform Lord von Bergow of the unsettling news. After an extensive discussion—where you can leverage your quest knowledge for reputation gains—you are tasked with interrogating a prisoner in the dungeon to garner more intelligence about the bandits. In addition, von Bergow rewards you with an item from his personal armory for your ingenuity. This quest concludes, paving the way for your next challenge: Necessary Evil.
