“Ke Huy Quan Discusses Overcoming Stereotypes to Become an Action Hero in Love Hurts”

Ke Huy Quan is embarking on a new journey as a leading actor in the upcoming Valentine’s Day action thriller, Love Hurts. This film marks the directorial debut of Jonathan “JoJo” Eusebio, who brings a wealth of experience from his work in the action genre, having been involved in projects like The Fall Guy, Obi-Wan Kenobi, and John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum. The narrative centers around Marvin Gable (played by Quan), a hitman turned realtor who reunites with a former partner, only to find their lives are at risk.

Love Hurts showcases Quan’s well-deserved resurgence to fame following his acclaim in 2022’s Everything Everywhere All at Once, which not only put him back in the limelight but also earned him an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor. Since then, he has been actively engaged in various projects, including American Born Chinese, Loki, and Kung Fu Panda 4. Notably, this film represents Quan’s first leading role since his Oscar win, offering him the chance to exhibit his skills in action-packed sequences ahead of his role in the horror film Bad Boy.

In an insightful conversation with Joe Deckelmeier from ScreenRant, Quan elaborated on his experience in Love Hurts. He also shared the unexpected role that legendary filmmaker Steven Spielberg played in his acceptance of the leading role. Moreover, Quan humorously expressed which iconic action star he’d like to sell a house to, reflecting on his character’s real estate adventures.

The Impact of Steven Spielberg on Quan’s Decision to Join Love Hurts

“I’ve Been Conditioned to Think That Someone Like Me Cannot Be an Action Hero”

Ke Huy Quan: It’s astonishing to think about. Initially, when I read the script, the idea of not only playing Marvin Gable but also being at the top of the call sheet felt foreign to me. It struck me that I had unconsciously accepted the notion that individuals like myself could not be seen as action heroes.

To gain clarity, I reached out to my all-time favorite director, Steven Spielberg. I told him about the leading role opportunity and asked for his opinion. He was very supportive, encouraging me to pursue this role without hesitation. His affirmation shifted my perspective, allowing me to see the potential for something unique. It was exhilarating to realize that I didn’t have to conform to existing stereotypes; we could redefine what an action hero looks like.

What does the title Love Hurts signify to you personally?

Ke Huy Quan: Love indeed brings its share of challenges, and feeling hurt is just part of the process. However, that shouldn’t deter you from fully investing in a relationship with someone you hold dear. Personally, I feel fortunate; I met my wife 22 years ago, and Valentine’s Day is especially meaningful for us. We cherish it by enjoying dinner and catching a movie together. This year feels refreshing with an action theme!

If Marvin could sell a house to any action star, who would it be?

Ke Huy Quan: That’s a tough choice! There are so many iconic names… I can’t help but want to sell to all of them. As a real estate agent, my goal would be to sell as many homes as I can, so why limit myself? Those action stars you mentioned are legends, and I would take great pride in selling a home to any of them.
