Katy Perry’s Role in Zoolander 2: Explore the Character Played by the Singer

Katy Perry’s appearance in the 2016 comedy-action film Zoolander 2 was virtually anticipated before the movie hit theaters on February 4, 2016. The film generated significant buzz with high-profile appearances from major celebrities like Naomi Campbell, Justin Bieber, and Benedict Cumberbatch, amplifying excitement leading up to its release.

Upon its debut, however, Zoolander 2 faced criticism from both audiences and critics, earning a total of $56.7 million at the box office, which was only a modest return against a budget of $50 million to $55 million.

The sequel includes many members from the original cast of Zoolander, featuring actors such as Nathan Lee Graham, Christine Taylor, Owen Wilson, Will Ferrell, Milla Jovovich, Ben Stiller, Justin Theroux, Jerry Stiller, Alexander Skarsgård, Billy Zane, and Andy Dick reprising their roles.

New additions to the cast feature stars including Kyle Mooney, Jon Daly, Sting, Penelope Cruz, Cyrus Arnold, Fred Armisen, and Kristen Wiig.

Katy Perry appears in a brief cameo, portraying herself and singing a single line. Prior to the film’s release, she teased her role by posting an Instagram video of herself singing “Relax,”the song that played a significant part in the original Zoolander film.

Even the film’s protagonist, Ben Stiller, who portrays Derek Zoolander, features in this teaser while humorously asking Katy Perry not to sing the song. Check out Katy Perry’s cameo here:

Celebrity Cameos in Zoolander 2: A Look Beyond Katy Perry

Zoolander 2 is packed with numerous notable cameos, including Justin Bieber, Ariana Grande, Benedict Cumberbatch, Tommy Hilfiger, Marc Jacobs, Mr. Valentino, Susan Sarandon, Alexander Wang, and Jourdan Dunn, despite its box office struggles.

One of the standout moments comes from Justin Bieber, who is depicted as being killed in the early scenes of the film. According to Ben Stiller (via Vogue), the length of Bieber’s cameo had to be reduced by five seconds for compliance with censorship guidelines.

Prior to the movie’s Sydney premiere, Stiller commended Bieber, asserting that he was someone who could take a joke about himself.

Benedict Cumberbatch transforms dramatically with heavy makeup, making him nearly unrecognizable in the role of a gender-fluid artificial intelligence model named All, delivering memorable lines like “All is not confined by binary restraints”when questioned about gender.

Additionally, Susan Sarandon, known for her role in The Rocky Horror Picture Show, makes an appearance alongside John Malkovich.

The film firmly establishes its connection to fashion with cameos from renowned designers like Alexander Wang, Marc Jacobs, Tommy Hilfiger, and Mr. Valentino, who all receive dedicated scenes for their introductions. They are also joined by British model Jourdan Dunn.

Anna Wintour, the editor-in-chief of US Vogue, stands out with more screen time than many of the celebrity cameos. She portrays a satirical version of herself, donning a stunning Chanel couture ensemble at one point. In a 2016 conversation with the Sydney Morning Herald, Stiller mentioned,

“Anna was always supportive of the first movie and kept on asking me over the years whenever we crossed paths, ‘When are you going to make a second one?’.”

“So when we finally decided to do it, I reached out to her and said, ‘Hey, I’m going to do this.’ She was just an incredible partner and really helped us get a lot of people to be in the movie, and was kind enough to be in the movie,” he elaborated.

At the Golden Raspberry Awards, Zoolander 2 was nominated for seven ‘Worst’ awards, including Worst Picture, Worst Director (Ben Stiller), Worst Actor (Ben Stiller), and Worst Screen Combo, among others. Out of all the nominations, Kristen Wiig took home the award for Worst Supporting Actress.

It also earned a nomination for Choice Movie: Comedy at the Teen Choice Awards.
