Katy Perry’s Parents: Everything You Need to Know About Keith and Mary Hudson

Katy Perry has transformed significantly since her debut with her first Christian gospel album, which was heavily influenced by her strict, conservative upbringing. It wasn’t until 2008 that she broke free from that ultra-religious lifestyle and embraced her playful, cheeky persona, which was first showcased in her hit single “I Kissed A Girl.”

The talented “Roar”songstress was born on October 25, 1984, to Pentecostal pastors Mary and Maurice Keith Hudson. Her childhood was largely spent in religious schools and camps across the United States as her parents traveled extensively, establishing churches before eventually settling in Santa Barbara.

Katy Perry’s parents, Maurice Keith Hudson and Mary Hudson, first crossed paths when Mary was a radio news director and journalist. The couple married in 1979 and has since dedicated over forty years to their roles as Pentecostal pastors and evangelical ministers.

Interestingly, Perry’s parents were not always ultra-religious. In fact, her mother had a relationship with the famous American guitarist Jimi Hendrix in the 1960s, and Keith was part of a drug research team that was involved in the production of LSD.

Everything changed for them approximately fifty years ago when Keith believed God spoke to him in an apple orchard, which led him to commit his life to Christianity and establish his own ministry.

Despite the strict religious background, Mary has aimed to expand her horizons. According to her Instagram profile, she describes herself as an author and speaker, passionately advocating for empowering women who think outside conventional norms. Currently, as reported by Pop Culture, Katy Perry’s mother is running for a position on the Republican Party’s Central Committee in Santa Barbara County.

In 2021, both Mary and Keith faced serious allegations regarding the misuse of funds from their charity organization. Reports indicated that an astounding 96% of the donations received by Keith Hudson Ministries were diverted to cover lavish retreats, flights, and other high-end living expenses.

The investigation revealed that the charity raised $186,000 in 2019, but spent a staggering $178,000 on these extravagant costs, leaving just $7,600 in cash by year’s end.

Throughout her career, Katy Perry’s relationship with her parents has been turbulent due to their differing lifestyle choices. For instance, in 2013, Keith delivered sermons criticizing his daughter, even labeling her as a “devil child”and urging the congregation to pray for her.

“They ask, how can I preach if I produce a girl who sang about kissing another girl?” he said during his sermon.

Despite these conflicts, the Firework songstress has learned to accept their differences. In a 2017 interview with *Today*, Perry shared with Natalie Morales:

“They don’t agree with some of the things I do, and they do wish that I could do other things.”

In a heartfelt moment during the September 4 episode of *Call Her Daddy*, Perry praised her mother, calling her a saint for the sacrifices she endured while raising the family amid challenging financial situations. She expressed that her respect for her parents deepened significantly after she became a mother herself.

“It was a little volatile,”Perry said of her religious upbringing. “After having my child — I always respected my mother — but the level of respect for my mother, and my parents in general, it just went through the roof.”

She continued:

“I do think my parents, with the tools that they had and their own upbringings, really did the best that they could. And my mother, you know, she is a saint. She sacrificed every step of the way. She was the last to sit at the dinner table every single time.”

Katy Perry welcomed her daughter, Daisy Dove Bloom, on August 26, 2020. Daisy is the second child of Perry’s partner, Orlando Bloom, who also has a 13-year-old son from his previous marriage to Miranda Kerr.
