ScreenRant: Geum-ja appears to have the most altruistic reasons for participating in the games. How does she cope with the ruthless nature of the competition?

Kang Ae-sim: My character, Geum-ja, has endured considerable hardships throughout her life. Her sole focus in the games is ensuring her son’s safety. While she does care for others, her priority remains on surviving alongside him and escaping the horrors of the competition.

How does Yong-sik react upon discovering his mother is in the game, and how does this change his strategy?

Yang Dong-geun: Yong-sik’s approach to the games is heavily influenced by his mother’s presence. While he might have been driven to succeed without her, her influence causes him to reconsider his choices, ultimately leading him to vote for an end to the games rather than continuing. Their relationship profoundly alters his experience in the competition.

Can you share any insights about additional relationships your characters will develop in Season 2?

Kang Ae-sim: One standout moment for my character occurs during the six-legged race. It’s the first time Geum-ja interacts with individuals outside of her son. Initially skeptical, she forms an unexpected alliance with Hyun-ju. I vividly recall a moment during filming where I couldn’t help but laugh at how the actress portrayed her character—standing tall, looking almost like a meerkat. It was so amusing that we had to pause filming to regain composure!
