How to create an invisible table in Word

Many people prefer invisible tables in their Word documents for various reasons. They are great for organizing text and data, providing a clearer view of the contents of a table. But you can remove the table borders to give it a cleaner look. However, to navigate through cells and columns, you must see the grid line.

But as the world’s most popular word processor, Microsoft Word provides an outstanding level of table customization. So no matter the reason you need to create a borderless grid, Word makes it easy for you to do so. Here are some common ways to create and customize an “invisible” marginless table.

Table tools

Microsoft Word offers great options for creating and customizing tables. Breaking text and pictures into rows and columns is incredibly easy using the commands provided on the toolbar. There are several limitations for the Word table creator, including making changes to your preferred border settings.

The Table Tools tab on the Word toolbar offers many options for controlling borders and lines. You can set the visibility of the table borders and customize the table according to your needs.

Remove all borders

The easiest way to create a completely invisible table is to remove all table or cell borders. This will make the table borders transparent, leaving only the contents fully visible. However, you will still be able to see the table grid, so navigating through the cells will be as easy as before.

Here are the steps to create an invisible table using this method.

  1. Go to the “Insert” card on the Word toolbar.

  2. Select Table.

  3. Hover over the grid to select the desired number of rows and columns in the table. If you want to create a large table, select “Insert Table” from the drop-down menu, then adjust the number of rows and columns.

  4. Once you’ve created your table, click the anchor in the top left corner of the table until you’ve selected the entire table.

  5. Click the Table Tools tab on the main toolbar.

  6. Click the arrow next to Borders.

  7. Select “No Border” from the drop-down menu. All borders from the table will be removed.

Following these steps should hide the borders in the entire table. You can also hide only certain border lines from the table. Here’s how to do it:

  1. Place the cursor inside the table.

  2. Select the cells whose borders you want to erase.

  3. Go to Table Tools.

  4. Select the Home tab.

  5. Click the arrow next to Borders and select No Borders.

  6. The boundaries of the selected columns will be erased.

You can apply the same method to any number of tables and columns.

Borders and shading

You can add or remove borders using the Table Format option. This option opens a dialog where you can manually add, remove, and edit table borders to suit your needs. Follow these steps to remove row borders from a table.

  1. Select the entire table.

  2. Right-click the selection and choose Borders and Shading.

  3. A dialog box will open. Select the Borders tab.

  4. On the left side of the window, under Settings, select No.

  5. Click OK to save your settings.

The table borders will be invisible. You will still be able to see the grid lines if you have enabled them. You can apply the same steps to erase certain column borders.

Turn grid lines on and off

When creating tables without margins, you still need to be able to navigate through columns and rows. If you need to print a document and need a borderless table, it is recommended that you enable grid mode. Table borders are printed, but grid lines are not, making them a valuable tool for borderless document editing.

If you see light dotted lines, Gridlines Preview is turned on. This option allows you to see the structure of the table. However, you can remove the grid lines if you wish. Here’s how to do it.

  1. Place the cursor inside the table.

  2. Go to Table Tools.

  3. Select Home.

  4. Click the arrow next to Borders and select the View Grid Lines button.

  5. The grid lines will be hidden from the display.

If you need to view the grid lines again, click the View Grid Lines button to make them reappear. Gridlines will remain for all Word documents.
