How to force restart your iPhone or iPad (all models)

A simple restart of your iPhone or iPad can fix a lot of minor glitches. But if your device won’t turn off or turn on, the screen is black, or it freezes and becomes unresponsive, you need to look beyond a regular restart. This is where forced restart or restart of your iPhone comes to the rescue.

Whether you’re looking at the newest iPhone 13 and iPad mini, or using an iPhone 6s, a forced restart can come in handy for fixing any issues in the process. Here’s how to force restart all iPhone models.

How to Force Restart iPhone # 13, 12, 11, X Series, iPhone 8 and SE 2020

The iPhone 13, 12, 11 series, XS, XR, and iPhone X have Face ID and no Home button. The iPhone 8 series and the new iPhone SE 2020 have a Home button with Touch ID. But the process for force restarting all of these devices is the same.

  1. On the left side of the device, press and quickly release the volume up button.
  2. Then press and immediately release the volume down button.

  3. Finally, on the right side of the device, press and hold the side button.

  4. Release the side button when you see the Apple logo on the iPhone screen.

How to Force Restart iPhone 7 or 7 Plus

iPhone 7 or 7 Plus has its own unique forced restart method that is different from all older or newer iPhones. Here’s how to force restart your iPhone 7.

  1. Press and hold the side button on the right side of the iPhone and the volume down button on the left side at the same time.

  2. Release both buttons when the Apple logo appears on the screen.

This method is also used for the 7th generation iPod Touch. Just use the top button instead of the side button.

Restart iPhone 6s or earlier.

Here’s how you can force restart iPhone 6s, 6s Plus, iPhone SE 1st generation, iPhone 6, 6 Plus, iPhone 5s, 5c and earlier.

  1. Press and hold the Home button on the front of the device and the side button on the right side of the device at the same time.

These steps also apply to the 6th generation iPod Touch. Just use the top button instead of the side button.

How to hard reset iPad models with Face ID

The flagship iPads have Face ID and no traditional Home button. The process for rebooting these iPads is the same as on iPhone 8 and newer. Here’s how.

  1. Press and quickly release the Volume Up button on the right side of iPad.
  2. Press and quickly release the Volume Down button on the right side of iPad.

  4. Release the power button when iPad restarts.

Restart iPad using the Home button

  1. Press and hold the Home button on the front of iPad and the top button at the same time.
