How to beat Garm in God of War Ragnarok

If there’s anything to be said about God of War Ragnarok, it’s how the authors mix their fiction with classic Norse mythology. One such brilliant example is the Hound of Hel, Garm. After being freed by the well-meaning Atreus and Trad, Kratos and Atreus must find a way to stop the overgrown dog from devouring reality. Spoilers, this includes an awesome boss fight.

How to defeat Garm in Helheim in God of War Ragnarok

Garm is one of those battles that will take your breath away in God of War Ragnarok. This is when the game works to its fullest and really feels epic. Here’s an angry dad fighting a huge dog in a frozen analogue of hell. It’s great. The fight is divided into three very cinematic episodes. Let’s introduce you to each.

First phase

The first round of this fight, like many others in Ragnarok, takes time and patience. Garm keeps his distance for the most part, so you have to wait for him to get close to inflict pain. The dog will stomp and send shock waves of ice at Kratos. They can either be blocked or dodged. Garm will then jump forward with a telegraph attack to take a bite out of Kratos. Take the opportunity to parry him and then stab at that big muzzle.

Garm will also attack with his chain. As a rule, on the third stroke, it plunges into the ground. Freeze him in place with a throw of the Leviathan Axe, then grab the chain to pull him down for another attack. Finally, Garm will jump to the edges of the arena and launch ice balls. Dodge him and hold on to him.

Second phase

Once Garm pinned you down in the hallway, use Draupnir’s Spear to hit the shackle on his leg. After dealing enough damage, you can continue.

Third phase

The third and final phase is very similar to the second phase, except that Garm now has two weak points. Hit his leg and the collar around his neck to stun him and head into the city with Spartan Rage and Runic Attacks. Dodge his attacks like before and be patient and you will end this fight.
