How to Use Safari Tab Groups on iPhone, iPad, and Mac

You are probably used to saving the websites you like by adding them to your bookmarks. You can even create folders to keep related bookmarks together in one convenient place. 

With Tab Groups in Safari, you can save a set of sites in open tabs and then quickly and easily reopen the group. This is perfect for the websites you open every day for research, news, education or business. Then, in one quick action, you can switch to the right group of sites when you need them.

Tab groups are available in Safari on iPhone, iPad, and Mac. Plus, if you use iCloud to sync Safari across your devices, you’ll see your tab groups wherever you go.

Use Safari Tab Groups on iPhone and iPad

With Safari tab groups on your iPhone or iPad, you can open exactly the sites you need at the moment without having to open each one individually. This feature is available on iOS 15 and iPadOS 15 or later.

Create Tab Group in Safari

You can create a tab group from the open tabs in the Safari window, or you can set up an empty tab group and add websites later.

  1. Tap the tab icon in the toolbar at the bottom (top on iPad).
  2. Select the Tabs arrow , which displays the number of tabs currently open.
  1. Select New Empty Tab Group or New Tab Group from X Tabs .
  2. Give the tab group a name and click Save .

You will then see an overview of the tabs for the named group. If you’re done with tab browsing, click Done to return to the website you’re browsing.

Opening and closing a Safari tab group

You can open a tab group using the same action as when you created it. 

  1. Tap the Tab icon in the toolbar and use the Tabs arrow on the next screen. 
  2. Select the tab group you want to open and you will see an overview of the site tabs included as thumbnails. 
  3. Just select a tab to view the website.

To close a tab group and return to previous tabs, tap the Tab icon , and then the arrow next to the tab group name at the bottom (top on iPad). Then select the first option, which is most likely displayed as 1 tab, 2 tabs, or start page.

Add a tab to a group

You can add a tab to a group that already contains tabs or is empty. Press and hold the tab icon in the toolbar. Select “Move to Tab Group” and then select a group.

Alternatively, open a tab group in the tab overview. Tap the plus sign in the bottom left (top right on iPad) to open a new tab and visit the site. This will automatically add that tab (web page) to the group.

Rename or Delete a Safari Tab Group

You can give the existing tab group a new name, or remove the group entirely if you no longer need it.

  1. Tap the tab or group name arrow at the bottom (top on iPad) and then select Edit .
  1. Tap the three dots to the right of the tab group and select Delete or Rename . You can also drag the three lines next to the group up or down to change the order of the tab groups if you have more than one.
  2. When done, select ” Done ” in the top left corner of the small window.

Use tab groups in Safari on Mac

Just like on your Apple mobile device, tab groups in Safari on Mac make it easy to navigate to your collection of websites. This feature is available in Safari 15 and later.

Create a Safari Tab Group from Open Tabs

If you already have one or more tabs open in Safari, you can quickly place them all in a tab group.

  1. Select the tab group selector from the toolbar. It’s the arrow to the right of the sidebar icon.
  2. Select New Tab Group with this tab if you only have one tab open, or New Tab Group with X tabs if you have multiple tabs open.
  1. When the sidebar appears, you will see ” Untitled ” as the default name for the new tab group. Enter the name you want for your group and press the “Return” key .

Create an empty tab group

Perhaps you want to prepare a group of tabs for sites you plan to visit later. In this case, you can create an empty tab group.

  • If the sidebar is closed, use the tab group picker in the toolbar and select New Empty Tab Group .
  • If the sidebar is open, use the plus sign at the top and select New Empty Tab Group .

When the group appears in the sidebar, enter a name, which appears as ” Untitled” by default.

Opening and closing a tab group

When Safari is open, you can switch from the current window to a tab group in one of two ways. 

  • If the sidebar is closed, select the tab group selector in the toolbar and select the group you want to open.
  • If the sidebar is open, select a group under the Tab Groups section.

To close a tab group and return to the previous active window, select the tab group selector and select the top option, or select the top option in the sidebar. This should show up as 1 tab, 2 tabs, or start page.

Add a tab to a group

Whether you create a tab group from open tabs or as an empty container, you can easily add tabs to your group. 

Right-click a tab in the tab bar, hover over Move to Tab Group, and select a group from the list in the pop-up menu.

Or open the tab group and visit the website. This tab (web page) will be automatically added to the group.

Preview tabs in a group

You can also view the tabs in a group and quickly navigate to a specific tab in that group.

Open the sidebar using the button on the toolbar. Then select the Show tab overview icon to the right of the tab group. You can also right-click a group and select Show Tab Overview .

It displays an overview of all the tabs in the group, so you can select a specific tab to go straight to it.

Edit or remove a tab group

After you set up a tab group, you can add more websites to it and make changes to the group.

  • Remove a tab from a group : Open a group and close the tab by selecting the X on the left side of the tab.
  • Change the order of tabs in a . Open the group and drag the tab to a new location on the tab bar.
  • Renaming a tab group . Open the sidebar, right-click on the tab group and select ” Rename “. Enter a name and press the Return key .
  • Removing a tab group . Open the sidebar, right-click on the tab group and select Delete .
