Exciting News: “K-Pop Demon Hunters”Sequel in Production
Netflix and Sony have officially announced their partnership to produce a sequel to the wildly popular animated film, “K-Pop Demon Hunters.” With production now underway, fans can look forward to this new chapter set to hit screens in 2029.
Sequel Release Date and Production Insights
The much-anticipated sequel is slated for a release four years after the original film, which premiered in June 2025. Directors Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans will return to direct, having confirmed all necessary production agreements as of November 2025. While the casting of talent is still being fine-tuned, the extended timeline aligns with the common production schedules observed in animated films, indicating no significant issues with development.
A Cultural Phenomenon
Since its debut, the original “K-Pop Demon Hunters” has transcended conventional success, garnering an impressive 325 million views and becoming Netflix’s most-watched title to date. The animated musical features the K-pop girl group Huntr/x—Rumi, Mira, and Zoey—who juggle their dual lives as pop icons and demon hunters, safeguarding humanity against supernatural dangers. The film received laudable reviews, achieving a remarkable 95% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and drawing favorable comparisons to prominent animated franchises.
Box Office and Commercial Acclaim
Moreover, the film’s success was not confined to streaming; it also showed impressive box office achievements. Its sing-along edition, released in August 2025, became the first Netflix film to top the U. S.box office, earning approximately $19 million during its opening weekend. A Halloween rerun added $5 to $6 million to its domestic gross, bringing the total to around $25 million.
Soundtrack Success
The film’s music resonated strongly within the industry, with four songs from the soundtrack simultaneously appearing in the top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100—a historic achievement. The standout track, “Golden, ” performed by Huntr/x, claimed the number-one spot and maintained its dominance for eight consecutive weeks. The soundtrack later earned platinum certification from the RIAA in October 2025 and reached the pinnacle of Billboard’s Top 200 albums chart.
Exploring Untold Stories in the Sequel
In past interviews, Director Kang indicated that the sequel will delve deeper into character backstories that remained unexplored in the original film. She emphasized an intention to focus on the origins of HUNTR/X members, detailing how each character was chosen to become a demon hunter. By steering clear of origin stories initially, the filmmakers sought to present a fresh narrative that would engage audiences.
Director Kang expressed enthusiasm about the character developments in the sequel.
