Ongoing developments in the legal battle between Justin Baldoni and Blake Lively continue to captivate attention. On New Year’s Eve, Variety reported Baldoni’s initiation of a lawsuit against The New York Times, stemming from their coverage involving Lively.
Baldoni’s lawsuit includes text messages wherein Lively invited him into her trailer to discuss lines while she was pumping breast milk. In contrast, Lively’s allegations claim Baldoni entered without warning during her breastfeeding sessions. This distinction forms a crucial part of Baldoni’s defense against assertions made in The New York Times article that scrutinized his behavior.
Supporters of Baldoni allege that the media outlet selectively showcased events and statements to support a predetermined narrative. In response, a representative from The New York Times defended the integrity of their journalism, asserting that the article was based on thorough fact-checking and the review of a vast array of authentic documents, including the text messages exchanged between Baldoni and Lively.
Additionally, producer Jamey Heath contested accusations that he shared inappropriate images of his wife with Lively, clarifying that he only showed a non-sexual video documenting his wife’s home birth. Heath and fellow producer Steve Sarowitz conveyed their discontent with how The New York Times presented details, accusing it of editing communications to distort the truth and mislead readers.
“The role of an independent news organization is to follow the facts where they lead. Our story was meticulously and responsibly reported. It was based on a review of thousands of pages of original documents, including the text messages and emails that we quote accurately and at length in the article. To date, Wayfarer Studios, Mr. Baldoni, the other subjects of the article and their representatives have not pointed to a single error. We published their full statement in response to the allegations in the article as well. We plan to vigorously defend against the lawsuit.”
Examining Justin Baldoni’s Claims
Baldoni’s rebuttal to The New York Times primarily revolves around isolated text messages rather than a continuous dialogue with Lively. This lack of ongoing communication raises doubts about the validity of his claims against Lively. Reports indicate that Ryan Reynolds allegedly confronted Baldoni over fat-shaming concerns regarding his wife, an incident that casts Reynolds in a favorable light despite its negative implications for Baldoni.
Lively’s lawsuit contains allegations that Baldoni frequently commented on her weight during their film project. Notably, Baldoni does not deny these comments but attempts to shift attention to Reynolds’ reaction, labeling it as unprofessional.
In another facet of the ongoing discourse, Baldoni shared text exchanges between Melissa Nathan and Jennifer Abel, which contain jokes that Nathan was not responsible for the Daily Mail’s coverage of Lively. Nonetheless, Nathan’s messages still reflect empathy for the situation surrounding Lively.
Blake Lively’s Federal Lawsuit Against Baldoni
Following the launch of Baldoni’s lawsuit against The New York Times, Lively quickly initiated her own federal lawsuit against Baldoni. His legal representatives had previously indicated that Lively was not pursuing a federal lawsuit against him, making her move particularly notable.
Lively’s representatives clarified, “Nothing in this lawsuit changes anything about the claims advanced in Ms. Lively’s California Civil Rights Department Complaint, nor her federal complaint, filed earlier today.”
The statement emphasizes that Baldoni’s assertions—that Lively was not truly pursuing litigation against him—are fundamentally incorrect. As they elaborated, “This lawsuit is based on the obviously false premise that Ms. Lively’s administrative complaint against Wayfarer and others was a ruse based on a choice ‘not to file a lawsuit against Baldoni, Wayfarer,’ and that ‘litigation was never her ultimate goal.’” They expressed anticipation for an opportunity to confront all allegations made by Wayfarer in court.
