Junji Ito, the legendary Japanese horror manga artist famed for his groundbreaking series Uzumaki, is now venturing into the dynamic realm of J-Pop. This exciting crossover is highlighted by a new line of merchandise designed for the emerging idol group Phantom Siita. As detailed in a post on Phantom Siita’s X account, the merchandise will be showcased during their inaugural world tour, titled “Moth to a Flame,” which kicks off in Taipei on January 16. Notably, Ado, the group’s soloist and creative force behind their vision, revealed that Ito himself contributed the captivating illustrations.

Phantom Siita made their debut on June 26, 2024, featuring five distinct members: Mona (pink), Miu (white), Rinka (purple), Hisui (green), and Moka (light blue). The group kicked off their journey with the digital single “Otomodachi,”followed by the release of five additional singles, culminating in their debut album, Shoujo no Hi no Omoide, which hit stores on October 30.
Ado, who is recognized for her unique cover songs and captivating concealed persona, spearheaded the formation of Phantom Siita through an extensive audition process that attracted over 4,000 participants. Her vision aims to redefine the current idol landscape. Furthermore, Phantom Siita’s official website offers insights into the kanji behind their horror-themed idols, contrasting modern idols with the euphoric image of butterflies and positioning Phantom Siita as ‘moths’—a captivating concept.
“The kanji spelling is “怪忌蝶(Kaikicho). If modern idols are like ‘butterflies,’ then Phantom Siita is a heretical ‘moth’ in the idol industry. It’s scary and beautiful, making you want to reach out even though you know it’s scary. It’s filled with the hope that she will become an idol worthy of the word ‘idol.’
Ado also shared her enthusiasm in a follow-up post regarding the new merchandise, emphasizing the significant influence Ito’s early work, Tomie, played in inspiring the establishment of Phantom Siita. The story revolves around Tomie, a beautiful and enigmatic character whose allure drives those enchanted by her into madness.

A Note for International Fans

The merchandise will officially launch on January 16 at Phantom Siita’s debut concert. However, fans should be aware that, despite significant social media buzz, purchasing the items online may prove to be challenging. According to Ado’s comments on X, she is hopeful about offering the products on a made-to-order basis for wider accessibility, though no definitive plans have been announced yet. It’s possible that select items could become available after the conclusion of the tour, which is set to span through Asia before moving on to North America and Europe. Regardless, the collaboration with Junji Ito marks a significant milestone for the group.
