Jumpship Studio Reacquired by Limbo Producer

Overview of Recent Developments at Jumpship

  • Dino Patti has successfully reacquired Jumpship after selling the studio to the Thunderful Group in 2022.
  • The indie developer is poised for a transformation, emphasizing innovative storytelling and creative reimagining.
  • Under Patti’s leadership, Jumpship may either revive a previously discarded project or develop something entirely new.

Dino Patti, renowned for his role as co-producer of Limbo, has announced his reacquisition of Jumpship. This marks a notable shift in the studio’s trajectory, occurring less than three years after he sold it to Sweden’s Thunderful Group. Beyond his work with Limbo, Patti was instrumental in the creation of Somerville, which served as Jumpship’s first title.

In recent years, Jumpship has navigated a tumultuous landscape, experiencing two acquisitions and a significant restructuring since launching its inaugural game. In November 2022, Patti sold the studio to Thunderful, the publisher behind popular titles such as Planet of Lana, coinciding with the release of Somerville. Even though Patti stepped back from ownership, he remained actively involved with the team, retaining creative oversight post-acquisition. However, in late 2024, Thunderful executed layoffs at the UK-based studio and ultimately canceled a project that was intended as a spiritual successor to Somerville. Patti’s recent reacquisition signifies a full-circle moment for him in the game development landscape.

Patti took to social media to express his excitement about the return of Jumpship, describing this as the beginning of an exciting new chapter for the studio, which was founded in 2017. Reflecting on the recent history of the company, he acknowledged that the studio is currently “empty of employees”following last year’s layoffs. He stressed that this would necessitate a fundamentally different approach moving forward. Nonetheless, Patti emphasized his commitment to push for a “bold and bright vision”while advocating for the need for “fresh thinking”in the industry, particularly in how developers are treated.

Patti Unveils Future Plans for Jumpship

Patti heralded a strategic shift for Jumpship, stating that the studio aims to embark on a “completely new direction.”His vision includes fostering an environment that encourages ambition and collaboration with talented individuals to explore “new possibilities”in game development. Patti reassured fans and followers that more details would be unveiled soon, while reiterating Jumpship’s commitment to “emotion-driven storytelling, gameplay, and innovation.”

In addition to reclaiming Jumpship, Patti has made strategic moves elsewhere. Reports indicate that he has acquired a stake in Sad Owl Studios, known for developing Viewfinder, which is also based in the UK. Furthermore, Patti has assumed the role of strategic advisor at Thunderful, Jumpship’s former parent company.

With Jumpship’s plans for its next game, previously scrapped, the possibility remains that Patti may choose to revive that project. However, his emphasis on venturing into a new artistic direction suggests that fresh, original concepts may take precedence as Jumpship moves forward.
