Josh Brolin’s potential return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) as the formidable Thanos presents an ideal opportunity to address a lingering mystery stemming from one of Phase 4’s most polarizing films. First introduced in the post-credits scene of 2012’s The Avengers, Thanos emerged as the central antagonist during the Infinity Saga, most notably posing a credible threat in Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame. His quest for the six Infinity Stones enabled him to overpower Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, although they ultimately reversed his cataclysmic actions, erasing the iconic supervillain from existence.
Even after his demise (twice) in Endgame, Brolin hinted to ComicBook in February 2024 that he had heard through the rumor mill regarding Marvel Studios’ interest in reviving the Mad Titan. Reiterating his comments, Brolin has ignited discussions about the possible avenues for Thanos’ return, providing an exhilarating prospect for fans. Notably, one intriguing angle addresses a significant enigma from 2021’s Eternals.
Harry Styles’ Eros Remains Absent Since His Eternals Debut
Harry Styles Made His MCU Debut in Eternals’ Mid-Credits Scene

Chloé Zhao’s Eternals introduced a distinctive narrative approach within the MCU’s Phase 4, garnering a mix of reception but later earning more appreciation as viewers reflected on its ambition. The film established several captivating storylines, unfortunately leaving many unanswered questions that contribute to ongoing mysteries in the MCU. A focal point of this intrigue centers around Harry Styles’ portrayal of Eros, also known as Starfox, who is revealed as a member of the synthetic beings featured in the movie.

During Styles’ introduction into the MCU, Marvel Studios expressed considerable enthusiasm regarding Eros’ character direction. As noted by Kevin Feige in November 2023 during an interview with Entertainment Tonight, excitement surrounding Eros persists, yet four years post-debut, his character remains absent from the MCU’s narratives. This delay has been attributed to the introduction of numerous new characters across the Multiverse Saga. Nonetheless, the possibility of Eros’ reappearance may finally be in sight.
Eros’ Ideal MCU Comeback Is With His Brother, Thanos
Eros Was Introduced As Thanos’ Brother in Eternals

At the conclusion of Eternals, Pip the Troll, voiced by Patton Oswalt, introduced audiences to Eros, stating that he is Thanos’ brother. This element aligns with the character’s traditional comic background, where both Eros and Thanos are Eternals; however, Thanos is distinguished by his Deviant gene, which results in his monstrous appearance. While MCU adaptations have altered Thanos’ origin story, his bond with Eros remains intact, suggesting that should Thanos return, we may also see Harry Styles’ Starfox reemerge.
It is quite probable that Brolin will reprise his role as Thanos in either Avengers: Doomsday or Avengers: Secret Wars during Phase 6. Additionally, the possibility exists that the characters from the Eternals may also return in these major crossover events, offering the opportunity for the first on-screen interaction between Thanos and Eros. This potential reunion could be instrumental in addressing significant mysteries regarding their origins and connections within the MCU.

Exploring the Brotherly Roots of Thanos & Eros in the MCU

Changes to Thanos’ backstory within the MCU have raised intriguing questions about his lineage. Not only is Thanos not an Eternal but is depicted as a member of an entirely new species native to Titan. Conversely, Eros continues to be presented as an Eternal. In the comics, the Eternals are superpowered beings resulting from Celestial modifications of early humanity, while the MCU portrays them as synthetic creations designed by the Celestials to balance the Deviants, complicating the familial ties between Thanos and Eros.
The conundrum arises: How can the Eternal Eros be considered Thanos’ brother if Thanos is not classified as an Eternal? Some theories suggest that Eros may have been adopted into Thanos’ family after arriving on Titan to oversee the Emergence of a new Celestial. However, these theories remain speculative and unconfirmed. By reintroducing Thanos and Eros in Phase 6, Marvel could finally clarify their relationship and potentially deepen our understanding of Thanos as a character, shedding light on his motivations and family history.
