The official synopsis for season 13, episode 11 states,
“As detectives investigate Cristina’s disappearance, they search for CCTV footage to track her movements. Following a cell phone ping that leads detectives to Arkansas, they collect surveillance from the area, hoping it might provide clues regarding her whereabouts.”
What led to Joseph Porter’s Arrest?
According to court documents, Joseph Porter resided with his husband in Little Rock, Arkansas. In 2017, he was introduced to Cristina, who lived in Edina, Minnesota, through Facebook, and moved into her apartment soon after.
Their relationship was fraught with turmoil, resulting in frequent police calls to their residence, including one on the day Cristina vanished, as reported by the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette.
As detailed by Arkansas Online, Cristina endured domestic abuse, leading her to secure a restraining order against Porter. However, he breached the order and faced conviction in December 2017. Despite this, Joseph returned to her home on January 4, 2018, and her body was found just two days later on January 6.
Cristina’s remains were discovered by the New Orleans Fire Department within a shipping container at a junkyard, according to Fox9 Minneapolis.
Joseph Porter’s Current Status
The investigation zeroed in on Joseph Porter as detectives analyzed phone records following Cristina Prodan’s disappearance. Her cell phone had pinged a tower in Arkansas, prompting authorities to investigate the location. Upon his arrest, Joseph had noticeable burn injuries on his face.
Porter confessed to murdering Cristina after losing control in a fit of rage; he struck her multiple times and applied a chokehold. He then placed her body in a suitcase and transported it in his 1995 Honda Accord to incinerate her remains. He was ultimately charged with second-degree murder and received a sentence longer than what was originally anticipated due to the act of concealing her body, as reported by CBS News.
According to the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette, Hennepin County Prosecutor Mike Freeman stated in a public announcement,
“This was a heinous act of violence. It required months of investigative work and collaboration to compile the evidence necessary for a guilty plea. We ensured he would not serve just 15 years for such despicable behavior, and we succeeded in securing the additional time he rightfully deserves.”
Joseph Porter remains incarcerated at the Minnesota Correctional Facility in Oak Park Heights, with a projected release date in November 2034.
