Joe Miñoso Discusses Cruz’s Future on Chicago Fire and Teases Season 13, Episode 10 “Ramifications”

Chicago Fire made its much-anticipated return to NBC on January 8, with a winter premiere spotlighting Joe Miñoso’s character, Cruz. The show continues to air new episodes every Wednesday at 9 p.m. ET, with season 13, episode 10 set to premiere on January 15. The episode, titled “Chaos Theory,”involves the team responding to a crisis at a community center, while Severide finds himself investigating a fellow squad member. Meanwhile, Kidd lends her support to a teacher navigating the aftermath of a serious incident.

The mid-season opener, “A Favor,”delved into Cruz’s experience following Junior’s career-threatening threat. Miñoso hints that this storyline will evolve throughout the upcoming episodes, reaching a resolution prior to the highly anticipated One Chicago crossover event scheduled for January 29. This crossover marks the first time in six years that all three series in the franchise will converge, and Miñoso expressed enthusiasm about collaborating with his fellow Chicago cast members.

In an insightful interview with ScreenRant, Miñoso discusses various topics including Junior’s prison release, Cruz’s aspirations to become a lieutenant, and how the legacy of Otis profoundly influences Cruz’s character development in season 13.

Cruz Encounters Tensions in Chicago Fire Season 13

“He’s going to get tangled up in a big old mess, but let’s hope he comes out the other side of it.”

ScreenRant: How will Cruz navigate Junior’s prison release and their heated encounter during the fall finale?

Joe Miñoso: Poorly. He’s going to make some choices that land him in a difficult spot, and we will see those consequences unfold in Episode 10. Cruz has always prioritized his family’s safety and will go to great lengths to protect them. Unfortunately, this will result in him getting caught up in a chaotic situation, but we can only hope he emerges from it relatively unscathed.

Will this storyline unfold throughout the latter half of the season?

Joe Miñoso: Yes, while you’ll see it progress, it will wrap up before the crossover event.

Cruz opted out of the lieutenant test to remain at Firehouse 51. Does he still yearn for that rank, and what are his current thoughts?

Joe Miñoso: After becoming a father and embracing leadership roles, especially as the acting lieutenant on Squad 3, the idea lingers in his mind. Cruz has financial responsibilities and, while he feels respected after reconciling with Severide earlier this season, he ultimately cherishes being a family man. Firehouse 51 is his true home and family.

“I want him to be safe, and I want him to feel like he’s been a successful father.”

What are your aspirations for Cruz’s future?

Joe Miñoso: It’s challenging to pinpoint after thirteen years with the series. I believe I’ve been given the best role in the One Chicago universe, balancing humor, action, and drama. My priority is Cruz’s safety and his growth as a father. Ultimately, what more could one wish for in life? I hope to continue in this role, whether Cruz becomes a chief or remains grounded at the firehouse— my focus is on the joy of working with this amazing team.

We all want happiness for Cruz.

Joe Miñoso: Absolutely! Everyone desires joy for their loved ones. I want Cruz to have a fulfilling and happy life. He’s a noble character, and it has been a privilege to portray him for so long.

Miñoso Attributes Cruz’s Relationship with Otis to Chicago Fire’s Popularity

“I think it’s what brought audiences to us. They are always one. He is the yin to my yang, for sure.”

Joe Miñoso: My son’s name is Otis, and I can confidently say that Yuri and I share a unique bond. We joined the show together and have been inseparable since. Otis’s recent visit to the set evoked a wave of nostalgia, highlighting the strong friendship we developed. There’s no Cruz without Otis; their dynamic significantly contributed to the show’s success, making them a beloved pair in the One Chicago universe.

Regarding the upcoming One Chicago crossover, who are you most excited to work with?

Joe Miñoso: I was initially thrilled to work with Steven Weber, and while that was enjoyable, it also brought new challenges. Beyond him, I’ve had the opportunity to collaborate with most of the cast across the trilogy, especially with Dermot Mulroney joining our show this season. His presence is surreal for me, and sharing scenes with him is a dream come true. Being part of this intricate universe that has lasted over a decade genuinely feels like a remarkable achievement. I hope to continue this journey for many more years.

Under the new command of Chief Dom Pascal (Dermot Mulroney), the firehouse braces for changes as he transitions from his decade-long leadership in Miami.
