On Saturday, October 5, the South Korean legal community disclosed that Jiyeon, the Dream High actress and former T-ara member, along with professional baseball player Hwang Jae-gyun of KT Wiz, reportedly submitted a divorce mediation application to the Seoul Family Court last month. This application signals the beginning of the divorce process for the couple.
Rumors regarding their potential divorce have circulated for several months. Initially, these speculations arose on June 25 during a baseball broadcast on KNN when a commentator questioned another if he had heard about Hwang Jae-gyun’s divorce. The second commentator further inquired whether there were any articles discussing this topic.
Although their discussion on this subject was not part of the official broadcast, it was captured during a YouTube livestream and quickly went viral. The speculation intensified when Jiyeon announced a hiatus on her YouTube channel.
Despite her then-agency denying these divorce rumors, recent videos uploaded by the idol rekindled the conjecture. On September 20, Jiyeon released a video showcasing the preparations and behind-the-scenes footage of T-ara’s 15th Anniversary Fan Meeting, during which many viewers noted her lack of a wedding ring.
These rumors were eventually confirmed by new information from the South Korean legal circles. Both Jiyeon and Hwang Jae-gyun issued statements regarding their decision to divorce. Notably, Jiyeon has removed all wedding photos and pictures of Hwang Jae-gyun from her Instagram, along with deleting YouTube videos featuring him.
Jiyeon and Hwang Jae-gyun Address Their Divorce Submission
The couple married in December 2022, following a four-month public relationship announcement. In light of their divorce, Jiyeon’s legal representative issued a statement detailing the reason for their separation.
“The parties were unable to overcome their differences and have agreed to divorce after a period of separation. They have submitted a request for divorce mediation to the Seoul Family Court. We earnestly request that you refrain from sensational reporting and speculative comments.”
In her statement, Jiyeon expressed her sentiments:
“Hello, this is Jiyeon. Firstly, I apologize for bringing you unpleasant news. We have agreed to proceed with mediation for divorce. I kindly ask for your understanding for not being able to make a quick statement. I will strive to present myself in a better light in the future. Thank you.”
Hwang Jae-gyun also shared his thoughts regarding the submission for divorce:
“I apologize for bringing this unpleasant news to our fans. Jiyeon and I have agreed to divorce after much consideration due to personality differences, and we have submitted a request for divorce mediation to the Seoul Family Court. We plan to conclude this matter amicably through the mediation process.”
He added,
“Although our relationship as a couple has come to an end, we will continue to support and cheer for each other in our future endeavors. I sincerely apologize for disappointing our fans and kindly ask that you refrain from indiscriminate speculation and reporting.”
As the news unfolds, fans eagerly await further updates on the couple’s divorce. Jiyeon and Hwang Jae-gyun tied the knot in December 2022, shortly after publicly announcing their relationship.
