Before the episode airs, let’s examine the disturbing events surrounding Jessica Lunsford’s case.

Who was Jessica Lunsford and what transpired?

Jessica Lunsford was just a young girl, born on October 6, 1995, to Mark Allan Lunsford and Angela Bryant. Following her parents’ divorce shortly after her birth, she lived with her father and grandparents in Homosassa, Florida.

On the night of February 23, 2005, Jessica went to bed like any other child, but she was never seen alive again. Authorities launched a search that lasted nearly a month, ultimately leading to the grim discovery of her remains. Jessica was found buried in a plastic bag approximately 150 yards from her home.

Investigators concluded that Jessica had died from suffocation inside the plastic bag and that she had also been assaulted prior to her death.

As the investigation unfolded, the police identified John Couey, who lived in a mobile home directly across from the Lunsford residence. A crucial tip came from Couey’s niece, who brought to light his troubling history of violence against women.

The trailer belonged to Dorothy Dixon, Couey’s sister, who permitted the police to search only portions of the home. This led to a significant breakthrough; detectives discovered bloodstains and DNA belonging to both Couey and Jessica on a mattress, resulting in Couey’s arrest and subsequent charges.

What happened to John Couey?

Following his arrest, Couey confessed to assaulting and murdering Jessica Lunsford. He claimed that he initially intended to burglarize the home but, upon being spotted by Jessica, lured her outside and took her to his trailer. He held her captive for three days before placing her in a plastic bag and burying her alive.

Eventually, the jury found him guilty on all counts, and he was sentenced to death. However, he passed away from natural causes before the state could carry out his execution.

Tune in to People Magazine Investigates tonight at 9:00 PM EST on ID to learn more about this heart-wrenching case.
