At the 50th anniversary celebration of the American Music Awards (AMAs), Jennifer Lopez captivated audiences with an impassioned message. The iconic “Let’s Get Loud”singer made a pre-recorded appearance on Sunday, October 6, 2024, for the special milestone event, expressing her admiration for the awards’ legacy and reminiscing about her childhood memories of watching the show. The 55-year-old performer articulated:
“Music has an extraordinary ability to heal, uplift, and unite us. For half a century, the AMAs have been highlighting this incredible truth, and I am thrilled about the next 50 years filled with music and magic.”
Lopez also reflected on her memorable moments at the AMAs, particularly her debut performance in 2001, when she showcased her chart-topping single, “Love Don’t Cost a Thing.”

During the American Music Awards’ 50th Anniversary Special, Jennifer Lopez looked back on her numerous appearances throughout the years. In her pre-taped segment, she commended the remarkable journey of the awards show.
“It’s amazing, isn’t it? Fifty years of the American Music Awards! I can still recall watching them at home as a young girl.”
The video then transitioned to Lopez’s inaugural performance at the 28th AMAs in 2001, where she dazzled the audience with “Love Don’t Cost a Thing,”the lead single from her sophomore album, “J.Lo.”Dressed in a striking red and white striped crop top, she electrified the Paris-themed stage with her dynamic choreography and ensemble of backup dancers.
As she reminisced about her first performance, Lopez exclaimed, “What!”acknowledging that it felt like “ages ago.”The tape then flashed back to a moment in 2011 when she was honored with the Favorite Latin Artist Award at the AMAs. She shared:
“Receiving a fan-voted award is incredibly meaningful because it comes directly from the people who listen to your music. It’s truly a humbling experience.”
In 2015, just four years after winning her 2011 award, Jennifer Lopez had the honor of hosting the American Music Awards. She mentioned in her recorded message that being the host was “an immense privilege.”During the show, Lopez made a splash by changing into 12 different outfits over the course of six hours. She explained:
“I decided I would switch outfits each time I came on stage. We performed a compilation dance medley to some fantastic tracks from that year, and I wanted to share that love and energy with everyone.”
Lopez playfully hinted that she may take on this exciting challenge again in the future. Additionally, she shared her experiences of her tribute to Celia Cruz during the 2013 AMAs, performing three of the legendary Cuban singer’s greatest hits: “Químbara,””Bemba Colorá,”and “La Vida Es Un Carnaval.”Lopez expressed:
“Performing a tribute to Celia Cruz was one of the most unforgettable nights of my life. She’s an icon, not just in Latin music, but worldwide.”

The special also featured notable guests such as Carrie Underwood, Gloria Estefan, and Jimmy Kimmel. CBS described the 50th Anniversary Special of the American Music Awards as:
“An evening celebrating 50 years of groundbreaking music, iconic moments, unforgettable performances, and rich pop culture history.”
This event marks the first American Music Awards show since November 2022 and aired on CBS. It is also available for streaming on Paramount+.
