Warning: This article contains potential spoilers for Batman and Robin #17!
As an admirer of the Red Hood, particularly the portrayal from the Judd Winick era, I can confidently say he is my favorite character without question. Although a new solo series for him isn’t on the horizon, Red Hood’s significant return to Batman’s storyline as a pivotal character feels like the next best thing. Excitingly, I’m already captivated by his portrayal, an enthusiasm that has eluded me for years.
Red Hood’s Welcomed Return to Batman’s Storyline
Fans of the Bat-Family will be delighted to know that I have been consistently following the recent Batman and Robin series, now in the capable hands of Phillip Kennedy Johnson and Javier Fernández. This run has particularly engaged me due to its deep ties to the wider Bat-verse.
Significant Developments in Batman and Robin #17
In Batman and Robin #17, we witness a pivotal moment: the breakdown of the long-standing partnership between Damian and Bruce, leaving Batman to navigate a turbulent landscape without his trusted ally. This occurs at a grim time as Bruce is struggling to recover from a near-fatal encounter with the merciless villain, Memento. Despite Oracle’s firm recommendation for him to take a breather, Bruce stubbornly refuses, leading Barbara to take charge and summon help.
With a casual “Evening,” Batman is greeted by a familiar figure emerging from the shadows. Although initially concealed, it quickly becomes clear that the lurking presence is none other than Jason Todd, Batman’s second son and former Robin. While Bruce prefers to work alone, Jason’s sharp yet heartfelt response encapsulates their complex relationship: “I’ll always love that about you, old man. No respect for your limitations.” In a striking reveal highlighted by Javier Fernández’s artistic prowess, Red Hood joins Batman in a daring leap from the rooftop, signaling that Bruce is, albeit begrudgingly, accepting Jason’s partnership once more.
My Enthusiasm for Jason Todd’s Characterization
Instantly, I was elated to see the figure in the shadows was my beloved Jason Peter Todd. Although any appearance would have delighted me, I found immense joy in their conversation, hinting at PKJ’s masterful take on Jason’s character. To me, Jason embodies raw emotion, masked cleverly by humor and a seemingly laid-back attitude, and this moment encapsulated that perfectly.
Jason is not typically inclined towards teamwork, particularly with Bruce. Yet, when Oracle made the call, he readily answered the call to support his father, all while maintaining a playful banter and occasional jibes. He demonstrates loyalty despite Bruce’s insistence that he doesn’t require assistance. I find the dynamic that PKJ has crafted enthralling—Bruce exasperated by Jason’s presence, while Jason jests that help will come regardless of his father’s desires. Plus, I can’t help but smile at Jason’s affectionate nickname for Bruce, “Old Man.”
Anticipating Red Hood’s Future in PKJ’s Batman and Robin Run
While Batman and Robin #17 offered limited content for Jason Todd, my anticipation for what PKJ has lined up for him is through the roof. I eagerly await to see how his character develops further in this promising storyline.
