Jason Blundell Launches New PlayStation Studio: Dark Outlaw Games

Jason Blundell, a notable figure in the gaming industry and former veteran of the Call of Duty franchise, has announced the formation of a new development studio named Dark Outlaw Games. This venture is being established within the framework of PlayStation Studios. Blundell, recognized for his significant contributions to the first four installments of the Black Ops series, departed Treyarch back in 2020. Subsequently, he co-founded Deviation Games with Sony’s support, although that endeavor concluded when the studio closed its doors in early 2022.

Inside Dark Outlaw Games

In a recent appearance on The Jeff Gerstmann Show, Blundell shared insights about his latest role. He emphasized that Dark Outlaw Games has been operating quietly as they prepare to unveil their projects:

“I’ve had the amazing opportunity to create a new studio within PlayStation Studios for Sony. The studio is called Dark Outlaw Games, and we have been working away in the shadows for a while. When we got something to talk about, we’ll step out into the light, but you know the story for me is always about the game, not about the studio…”

Blundell highlighted his commitment to focusing on game development rather than public exposure, stating, “the reason why we’re not doing a fanfare or shout about it from the rooftops is like, let’s get something, right?”He expressed gratitude for the opportunity to lead a first-party studio, noting that such chances are rare in the industry.

Looking Ahead: Plans for Development

He further elaborated on the current status of the studio, mentioning that while they are starting modestly and keeping things low-key, they are actively fostering collaboration and innovation among their team. Blundell’s passion for programming drives him to test ideas and develop new concepts:

“We’re keeping it kind of low key. We have been going for a little bit of time now… I’m just gonna keep that side. I got an executive producer this time. But yeah, it’s very exciting, and I love the fact that still, at this point in my career, I’m given these opportunities…”

Dark Outlaw Games is situated in Los Angeles, and though it appears to be small at present—based on information available via LinkedIn—expansions are anticipated as they develop their projects. Given the typical timeline for AAA game production, we might not witness a tangible release until 2027 or 2028.

As the industry eagerly awaits further announcements, Blundell’s ambition to create engaging new intellectual properties resonates with gamers everywhere. His enthusiasm for innovation and dedication to crafting exceptional gaming experiences heralds a promising future for Dark Outlaw Games.
