Jannik Sinner makes light work of Grigor Dimitrov in final to win Miami Open 2024, becomes new World No. 2

At the 2024 Miami Open final on Sunday, Jannik Sinner easily defeated Grigor Dimitrov in straight sets, securing his second career Masters 1000 trophy. It only took the Italian 75 minutes to defeat the Bulgarian and claim the title with a dominant 6-3, 6-1 win.

Despite defeating formidable opponents such as Hubert Hurkacz, Carlos Alcaraz, and Alexander Zverev in the lead-up to the summit clash, Dimitrov was considered the underdog in the final. In contrast, Sinner’s only challenging match before the final was in the semifinals against former US Open champion Daniil Medvedev, whom he defeated in straight sets.

During Sunday’s match, the Italian continued his strong performance, securing four breaks of serve and easily overpowering his 32-year-old opponent. Sinner’s dominance was evident throughout the Miami Open, where he only dropped one set in the entire tournament, against Tallon Griekspoor in the Round of 32.

Last year, Sinner earned his first Masters 1000 title at the Canadian Open, giving him a second victory at this level. This also adds to his major titles for the season, as he previously won his first Grand Slam trophy at the Australian Open by defeating Medvedev in the final.

Furthermore, after defeating Dimitrov, Sinner rose above Alcaraz to secure the World No. 2 position, the highest ranking of his career thus far. Sinner, who is 22 years old, currently holds a 3-1 advantage in head-to-head matches against Dimitrov and has emerged victorious in their last three consecutive encounters.

Since the start of the 2024 season, Jannik Sinner has only suffered one defeat thus far, which was at the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells. He was defeated by eventual winner Carlos Alcaraz in the semifinals.

In addition, Sinner has emerged victorious in all three other tournaments he has competed in this year – the Australian Open, the ABN AMRO Open in Rotterdam, and most recently, the Miami Open. With a dominant 22-1 win/loss record, the rising star is on track to become the World No. 2 as the season transitions to the clay swing.

It is expected that Sinner will make his next appearance at the Monte-Carlo Masters in April, marking the beginning of his journey on the surface. The Masters 1000 event will likely see the participation of top players such as Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic, Carlos Alcaraz, Daniil Medvedev, and many others.

Grigor Dimitrov, the Bulgarian, will reclaim his spot in the top 10 after more than five years, thanks to his impressive performance in Miami. Following the rankings update on Monday, he will ascend to World No. 9.
