The landscape of superhero entertainment has shifted dramatically, establishing itself as a dominant force with franchises like the Marvel Cinematic Universe and blockbuster titles such as Marvel’s Spider-Man and Marvel Rivals. While Marvel continues to enjoy significant success—despite some recent shortcomings within the MCU—DC has been striving to regain its footing in the competitive market.
Over the past decade, the DC brand has experienced a rollercoaster of mixed results. Despite a few notable successes, critically acclaimed projects have been scarce. This trend is particularly evident in the realm of video games, where DC has not released a breakout title since 2018. However, as the DC Universe embarks on a comprehensive transformation, this overhaul may present a much-needed opportunity for revitalizing its gaming offerings.
The Potential of the DCU in Revitalizing Video Games

Current Challenges in DC Video Games
The situation for DC games in recent years has been quite bleak. Although some players have grown to appreciate it over time, the reception for Gotham Knights released in 2022 was mixed, with critics offering divided opinions. Notably, the game underwent a prompt 40% price drop within just a month of release, suggesting it may not have met sales expectations, even though Warner Bros.did not formally disclose its performance.
Meanwhile, Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League quickly earned a reputation as one of the gaming industry’s most significant recent failures. Intended to be a triumphant entry for Rocksteady within the Arkham franchise, it unfortunately did not resonate well and fell short of Warner Bros.’ commercial targets.
On a slightly brighter note, Batman: Arkham Shadow managed over a million sales and garnered positive reviews. However, its exclusivity on the Meta Quest 3/3S has prevented it from achieving broader market penetration.
Given the aftermath of Suicide Squad and the confirmed closure of several Warner Bros.studios—including the cancellation of Monolith’s highly anticipated Wonder Woman game—the outlook for DC video games remains uncertain. Currently, the sole rumor of a developing Batman project by Rocksteady suggests it is still in its infancy, meaning fans may have to wait a considerable time before any new releases emerge.
Hope for the DCU Under James Gunn
With James Gunn and Peter Safran at the helm, the new DC Universe is officially underway, with Creature Commandos serving as the landmark kickoff. While this initial entry may have had its flaws, it lays the groundwork for a more integrated and cohesive DC cinematic universe moving forward.
In an exciting development, Gunn has indicated that the fresh DCU will not only focus on films and television but also anticipate video games that could connect authentically with the universe. Recent confirmations from Gunn and Safran reveal their collaboration with JB Perrette, head of Warner Bros.’ video game division, along with discussions with renowned developers at NetherRealm and Rocksteady.
However, it should be noted that Gunn has mentioned the first DCU-affiliated game is still “a couple years”away. Thus, even as it might seem like DC is faltering in the gaming arena, there remains a glimmer of hope for the future, albeit one that may take time to materialize.
