In a heartfelt revelation, James Gunn shared his insights on Weasel, one of the unique characters in the DC Universe. The filmmaker admitted that he penned an especially poignant episode about this innocent figure in the animated series Creature Commandos.
As Gunn’s inaugural project in his role as co-chairman and co-CEO of DC Studios, Creature Commandos showcases his creative vision, blending elements of horror, humor, and action. In a recent interview, he described writing Weasel’s script as the “saddest”experience of his career, indicating the depths of emotion encapsulated in the storyline.
Weasel, a peculiar anthropomorphic character, makes his debut in the 2021 film Suicide Squad. With his comical yet unsettling features—sharp claws, matted fur, and a slender build—Weasel captures attention, but also invokes fear. Accused of heinous crimes, including the alleged murder of 27 children, his misunderstood nature becomes central to his character arc. In Episode 4 of Creature Commandos, titled “Chasing Squirrels,”Gunn passionately advocates for Weasel’s innocence, illuminating the true circumstances surrounding his notoriety.
“I felt an overwhelming sadness while writing this,”Gunn confessed, reflecting on the emotional toll the episode took on him. During the creative process, he found himself in Colorado alongside his wife, where he realized the gravity of his writing, stating, “I think I just wrote the saddest thing that I’ve ever written in my entire life.”

The narrative continues as Weasel emerges from a forest in the animated series and interacts with a group of children drawn to his kind spirit. However, a misunderstanding leads a concerned bystander to call the police, sparking a tragic series of events. As the playful situation escalates, an unfortunate accident occurs, resulting in chaos and heartbreak.
In the aftermath, Weasel attempts to rescue a surviving girl from the devastation, but as he carries her body to safety, police officers misinterpret his intentions. “At the end of the day, [Weasel] is, in many ways, the most noble character in the show,”Gunn emphasized, reinforcing the character’s inherent goodness despite societal prejudice against his distinctive appearance.
This episode’s poignant storytelling resonates deeply, leaving a lasting impression on viewers. Even those unfamiliar with Weasel’s backstory are likely to feel empathy and sorrow upon learning of his plight. Gunn’s description of Weasel capture the harrowing essence of not being understood: an innocent creature hindered by appearances, silenced when he most needed to be heard. As viewers, we cannot help but be moved by Weasel’s plight and Gunn’s emotional investment into his journey.
