Hold on to your capes! DC Universe’s head honcho, James Gunn, has just thrilled fans with a sneak peek of the eagerly anticipated Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow. This fresh installment aims to reinvent the beloved superhero for a new audience, setting high expectations for its arrival in theaters.
In January 2023, shortly after assuming his role at the helm of the DCU, Gunn announced plans for a new Supergirl film. For nearly a year, updates on this project were sparse, leaving fans in suspense. However, January 2024 marked a pivotal moment when it was confirmed that Milly Alcock would take on the titular role of Kara Zor-El. Following a long hiatus, filming has officially commenced, with Gunn sharing the exciting news along with a behind-the-scenes image on social media.
On Twitter, Gunn posted a photo of Alcock seated beside the film’s new logo, signalling a significant milestone. “Thrilled to see cameras roll at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden on Supergirl, with Craig Gillespie at the helm and the phenomenal Milly Alcock as our Kara Zor-El,”he stated. He expressed confidence in Gillespie’s directorial vision and noted Alcock’s embodiment of the unique qualities envisioned by the original creative team behind the character, including Tom King and Bilquis Evely. Alcock echoed his post on her Instagram, introducing her character with the simple caption, “Introducing Kara.”

Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow is adapted from the acclaimed miniseries by Tom King and Bilquis Evely. This comic resonated with audiences due to its rich storytelling and exquisite illustrations. The film aims not only to capture the emotional depth of its source material but also to bring its fantastical elements to life on the big screen. Notably, Jason Momoa’s introduction as Lobo offers a thrilling twist, as Lobo’s notorious unpredictability is likely to contrast beautifully with Supergirl’s narrative, enhancing the film’s overall excitement and humor.
The film is expected to focus on Supergirl’s adventures prior to her arrival on Earth, exploring her backstory and interactions with diverse characters. Notably, she encounters an alien girl seeking vengeance following the destruction of her planet. Alongside Alcock, the cast includes Eve Ridley as Ruthye, Emily Beecham as Alura, Matthias Schoenaerts as Krem of the Yellow Hills, and Momoa as Lobo.
Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow is set to grace theaters on July 26, 2026, promising a blend of heartwarming moments and exhilarating action.
