James Gunn Provides Update on Upcoming DCU Project Following Superman

Overview of James Gunn’s Current DC Projects

  • James Gunn is concurrently directing Superman and preparing to direct Peacemaker season 2.
  • Speculations arise regarding his next project, with potential ideas including a Superman sequel or a second season of Creature Commandos.
  • Success for Superman is critical, as Gunn indicated that future DC films depend on its box office performance.

This summer, audiences will see James Gunn’s highly anticipated Superman film in theaters, but the accomplished director isn’t stopping there. As the head of DC Studios, Gunn is juggling various projects within the DC Universe (DCU). He recently shared insights into managing his multiple roles and revealed some promising news about his future endeavors.

Acknowledged as a pivotal moment for the DCU, Superman is crucial in establishing the franchise’s tone. In addition to Superman, projects such as Peacemaker season 2, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, Batman: The Brave and the Bold, Swamp Thing, and others are in various development phases. As co-CEO of DC Studios, Gunn’s influence spans across these initiatives, although he is both writing and directing only Superman and selected episodes of Peacemaker.

What’s Next for James Gunn?

On social media platform Threads, Gunn stated that he is currently investing considerable time in pre-writing his upcoming DC project. He has hinted in the past about selecting from four potential ideas, and it appears he has now settled on one. However, details about this project remain under wraps. In response to inquiries about how he balances his commitments, Gunn mentioned that while he focuses on Superman and Peacemaker, he also monitors other DCU projects and offers feedback as needed. He expressed that managing these responsibilities feels less overwhelming now compared to his earlier directorial experiences.

It’s still unclear whether Gunn will take on the directorial role for this next DC project or appoint another director to handle it. Over the years, Gunn has directed most of his original screenplays, with the exceptions being works like Brightburn and The Belko Experiment. Although he has previously passed projects to other directors, doing so for an upcoming DC project would make for an unusual shift in his recent strategy.

Fans are eagerly speculating about what direction Gunn’s next DC project might take. Potential contenders range from films like The Authority to series such as Waller or Booster Gold. However, there’s a strong belief that the upcoming project will lean towards a sequel for Superman or a continuation of Creature Commandos with season 2. Notably, while a second Superman film hasn’t been officially announced, Creature Commandos was confirmed for a second season in December 2024, and fans expect Gunn to replicate his writing success from the first season.

It’s important to note that the future of Gunn’s projects—and the entire DCU—largely hinges on the success of Superman. Gunn has made it clear that if the film fails to perform well, they will reconsider their plans, stating that they won’t “just keep making movies”if it flops. Despite the generally positive reception to the film’s first trailer, it remains to be seen whether enthusiasm will translate into box office success.

Superman is set to premiere in theaters on July 11, 2025.
