In a recent announcement, James Gunn updated fans on the developments concerning The Flash in the DC Universe. As of now, plans to reintroduce the Scarlet Speedster to theaters are not on the immediate horizon.
The Flash stands out as one of the iconic heroes in DC Comics. Following the leadership transition to James Gunn and Peter Safran at DC Studios, which involved a comprehensive revitalization of the DCEU, many fans are curious about the fate of The Flash. This interest is particularly heightened after the underwhelming box office performance of the last film featuring Ezra Miller.
While Gunn confirmed that there are indeed future plans for Barry Allen, he emphasized they are not rushing to bring him to the forefront of the new DC Universe. Responding to fan inquiries on social media, he clarified that no script has yet been greenlit for a new Flash film. Amid discussions about upcoming releases like Clayface, scheduled for September 11, 2026, Gunn reiterated that films will only enter production once a credible script is in place. “Because of the number one rule here at DC: No movie will be greenlit before the script is ready,”Gunn noted.
This cautious approach isn’t surprising to many observers, who anticipate a lengthy wait before DCU commits to another standalone Flash film. The last installment was noted as one of Warner Bros.’ significant disappointments, which may temper the studio’s enthusiasm for reviving interest in The Flash as a solo hero. There is speculation that we might see The Flash in ensemble projects, such as a Justice League reboot, despite Gunn previously stating that nothing related to Justice League is currently being developed.
Gunn’s current focus within DC’s fragmented slate, encapsulated in “Chapter One: Gods and Monsters,” includes notable projects like Superman: Legacy and The Authority, while The Flash is notably absent. Additionally, the poor performance of the recent film, partly attributed to Miller’s legal troubles and public controversies, has likely diminished the urgency to prioritize The Flash’s character. Calls for boycotting the movie in light of these issues further complicated its reception.
For those eager to revisit the previous film, The Flash is available for streaming on Netflix.
